ROLE SUMMARY

The Executive Director, Pharmaceutical Sciences Small Molecule Data Sciences will be responsible for building a new business line consisting initially of colleagues from the PSSM Data and Digital Innovation group, Statistics group, and the Right First Time/Knowledge Management Program Office, with a future-looking vision of growing the line to approx. 50 colleagues.

The Data Science leader will be responsible for defining and driving the PSSM Data Sciences strategy, to maximize the impact of integrated development of modeling, statistics, data and knowledge infrastructure, and digital innovation. This new line will drive our vision for seamlessly embedding digital solutions into our business workflows, allowing optimal use of all our data for scientific and portfolio analysis and decision making.

The integration of these business-critical Pharm Sci capabilities into a single, new Data Sciences line in PSSM presents an exciting opportunity to harness the collective power of these capabilities, forming a central hub for CMC digital and data methodologies and best practices, and enabling PSSM to achieve industry leading Data Sciences ambitions.

This new business line will be called PSSM Data Sciences and as the group leader, you will be sitting on the Pharm Sci Small Molecule Leadership Team reporting to the VP, Head of PSSM. This is a highly collaborative role that requires a close partnership with other PSSM business lines, MedSci lines, Pfizer Digital, other Pfizer Statistics and modelling groups, PGS, as well as external data and digital solution partnerships (such as AWS).

ROLE RESPONSIBILITIES

Primary responsibilities critical to the job:
  • Work closely with stakeholders across PSSM, partner lines, MedSci and PGS to develop a unified PSSM Data Sciences strategy in partnership with Pfizer Digital that enables the PSSM portfolio.
  • Own the start-up and implementation of a new Pharm Sci business line called PSSM Data Sciences, consisting initially of colleagues from the Data and Digital Innovation group, Statistics group, and Right First Time/Knowledge Management Program Office.
  • Drive PSSM Data Sciences to deliver on Bold Move 4 goal, through creating a world class data science organization, digitizing PSSM business workflows, and expanding real-time access to, and utility of PSSM data within PSSM and with PSSM partner lines.
  • Work with the PSSM Leadership Team and Pfizer Digital to drive digital maturity across the organization and build a digital culture that enables colleagues to thrive.
  • Manage a group responsible for the lifecycle management of data science products from eliciting and evaluating opportunities, ensuring the right PSSM guidance and expertise is provided for solution design and delivery, and into operational maintenance.
  • Ensure statistical expertise is appropriately applied to portfolio decision making and regulatory filings, also fully exploit the application of statistical modeling and statistical best practices into the work of the PSSM Data Sciences group.
  • Ensure our Quality by Design (QBD) and Co-Development vision for the Co-dev portfolio is underpinned by industry-leading Right First Time and Knowledge Management practices, driving an efficient iterative risk assessment process and data driven process understanding.
  • Have a keen focus on the business value of customer centric data science initiatives, ensuring good governance and KPI tracking.
  • Able to set clear priorities and drive agile/cross-functional teams to deliver complex projects.
  • Serve as the senior representative on behalf of PSSM to Pfizer Digital and ensure that digital and data governance standards and policies are being adhered to throughout the PSSM organization.
  • Work with Pfizer Digital to create and maintain data standards for digital technologies across PSSM.
  • Drive collaboration through PSSM to identify new areas that could benefit from data science support and provide opportunities for the team's career development while empowering colleagues to innovate and lead change both internally and externally.
  • Keep abreast of regulatory changes and new technologies related to modeling, statistics, data sciences and digital innovation.

  • Management:
  • Set the strategic direction for PSSM Data Sciences, in partnership with PSSMLT and other stakeholders
  • Recruit, train, develop, motivate, and retain highly skilled colleagues to provide effective and qualified resources to support the PSSM Data Sciences objectives.
  • Ensure that PSSM Data Science colleagues work effectively with chemists, engineers, analysts, formulation scientists, programmers, project leads and others supporting project delivery, to ensure high-quality data driven products, product understanding and digital solutions.
  • Drive and lead the articulation of appropriate standards and specifications for input to contracts with vendors, suppliers, and industry partners to deliver business outcomes.
  • Ensure that all team members receive regular formal reviews and help them to develop effective career plans and personal goals.
  • Ensure that objectives for team members are clearly set in line with the business and PSSM Data Sciences strategy.


QUALIFICATIONS

Required:
  • Advanced scientific or technical degree in data science, statistics, engineering, pharmaceutical sciences or related field.
  • BS + 20+ years of experience in managing the successful delivery of strategic projects across pharma organizations.
  • Minimum of 10-12 years of experience leading strategic and digitalinitiatives.
  • Demonstrable experience in building organizational culture, agile teams, and leveraging customer-centric digital ways of working.
  • A strong understanding of digital process design, continuous improvement, knowledge management and other aspects of Quality-by-Design.
  • Business line management experience in launching new technology products, and scaling for growth.
  • Excellent people skills, with an ability to partner with a dynamic leadership team.
  • Personal qualities of integrity, credibility, and commitment.
  • Strong communicator and mediator with the ability to influence at all levels.
  • Demonstrable experience in working effectively within a large matrix organization.
  • Ability to focus on detail without neglecting the bigger picture.


Preferred:
  • Experience in a broad spectrum of pharmaceutical sciences disciplines, computational chemistry techniques applied in drug discovery and development, and machine learning.


OTHER INFORMATION

Position is located in Groton, CT or Sandwich, UK, or Global Remote, primarily an office-based role involving sitting, walking delivering presentations, active engagement with colleagues and customers, etc.

Periodic travel between Pfizer sites including Groton US, Lake Forest US, Sandwich UK, Chennai India, etc. is required with limited travel to support internal/external business as appropriate.
