Chinese Mutual Aid Association (CMAA) is seeking a committed Lead Instructor to support its Adult Education programs. The Lead ESL Instructor will expand professional development opportunities and coach and mentor other instructors at CMAA and partner agencies to prepare limited English proficient (LEP) adult learners to enter the workforce, access postsecondary education or training opportunities, and otherwise participate in their communities. The lead instructor will also teach Adult Education classes such as ESL, ABE English Language Arts, or Citizenship.

Chinese Mutual Aid Association (CMAA) is a community-based organization, dedicated to fostering the integration of the Pan-Asian immigrant and refugee community into U.S. culture. Established in 1981, CMAA has been a cornerstone of the Uptown community since then, providing programming for generations of youth, adults, and senior citizens. The Adult Education and Workforce Department provides English as a Second Language, Adult Basic Education, Contextualized Healthcare Literacy Bridge, Office/Administrative Technology Literacy Bridge, and Digital Literacy classes; and assists clients with transitioning into the workforce and further education, through workshops and individualized counseling.

Job Responsibilities

The Lead Instructor is responsible for the following:
  • Developing lesson plans and curricula that utilize a broad range of differentiated techniques, addressing Illinois ESL Content Standards and ensuring that learners meet or exceed state-wide program metrics
  • Delivering those materials and curricula to CMAA and its partner instructors those materials and curricula
  • Coaching and mentoring CMAA and partner instructors on their teaching methods
  • Lead and collaborate on internal instructor professional development opportunities including but not limited to classroom observations, round table discussions on best practices, and programming for CMAA's Professional Development Institute
  • Represent Adult Education team in ongoing leadership discussions on strategy, outreach, registration, testing, potential offsite, student surveys, procedures and processes
  • Student leadership coordinator for the consortium
  • Monitoring student attendance, goals, referrals, and testing; administering assessments for the purpose of evaluating student progress; working with CMAA staff to ensure that students are able to access a wide array of support services
  • Planning, organizing, and providing classes to limited-English proficient adults at CMAA's main office virtually and/or online
  • Advocating on behalf of Adult Education students; working with management and development staff to identify opportunities for program growth
  • Other duties as assigned
