Chief Purpose of this position:

The Research Assistant Professor is responsible for providing functional oversight for all operations of the Bone Engineering, Science and Technology Lab. The individual must have competency and experience in bone biomechanics, bone cell biology and bioinformatics as it relates to skeletal biology and bioengineering. Experience planning, coordinating, and conducting rodent surgeries, as well as all associated animal care is required. The faculty member will provide functional oversight for all operations of research laboratories to include the following: instruction in lab procedures and safety; development of lab procedures and processes; maintenance of laboratory compliance with Environmental Health and Safety requirements; conducting experiments; purchasing supplies and equipment; equipment and inventory maintenance; hiring, training, and supervising multiple research personnel; coordinating undergraduate, graduate, and post-doctoral research; overseeing all undergraduate laboratory research; preparing IACUC, ACURO, and IRB protocols and annual reports; and oversight of related record keeping and reports. This position is dependent upon continued funding.

Position Responsibilities:

•Coordinate experimental design and perform independent research projects under the direction of laboratory PI.

• Compile and analyze test data and prepare reports of findings.

• Investigate and propose alternative experimental procedures.

• Directly supervise students and affiliate researchers.

• Provide instruction to lab users (e.g., PI, graduate students, undergraduate students, and research personnel) on proper use of lab equipment, lab safety, protocols, and procedures related to conducting experiments.

• Plan and conduct rodent surgeries as the primary surgeon, coordinating and assuming responsibility for all pre-operative and post-operative animal care.

•Assist manuscript preparation, editing, and submission.

• Prepare grants for core equipment.

• Prepare grant progress reports.

• Prepare IACUC, ACURO, and IRB protocols and annual reports.

• Coordinate purchase of supplies and equipment and maintenance of related records.

• Develop and implement laboratory policy and procedures; incorporate best practices as appropriate.

• Maintain laboratory facility in safe, clean, and organized manner.

• Coordinate scheduling of lab usage.

• Direct the scheduling and work of undergraduate research assistants in the laboratory.

• Calibrate lab instrumentation and maintain lab equipment.

Required Qualifications:

Minimum of five years of experience in an engineering field, in an academic research environment. Experience in bioengineering as it relates to musculoskeletal disease states and pathologies. Expertise in RNA-seq analyses and bioinformatics, cell and molecular biology. The ability to plan and conduct animal experiments in order to study human disease. Significant experience regarding lab safety and protocol, supervision experience, and superior written and oral communication skills including the ability to communicate effectively and tactfully with all levels of University administration. Additionally, candidate should have knowledge of grant submissions, excellent analytical, planning and organizational skills, and proven ability to manage projects and multiple assignments with attention to detail and deadlines. A Ph.D. in and engineering discipline is required.

Preferred Qualifications:

Ability to supervise capstone design projects.
