Senior Physician, Chair of Surgical Disciplines

The Central Michigan University College of Medicine welcomed its inaugural class in the summer of 2013. CMED's mission is to educate diverse students and trains culturally competent physicians to provide comprehensive care and services to underserved populations in Michigan and beyond. Students admitted into the medical school learn from a curriculum designed to prepare them to practice in these areas when they complete their residency training. This curriculum uses advanced technology, including state-of-the-art simulation and clinical skills labs. The College is accredited by The Liaison Commission on Medical Education and has experienced significant growth since its founding and continues to invest in its capacity to provide exceptional education and training to its students.

Reporting to the Dean of the College of Medicine, the Chair of Surgical Disciplines will oversee employed and volunteer teaching physicians in procedurally oriented specialties such as anesthesiology, surgery and its subspecialties, emergency medicine, neurosurgery, obstetrics and gynecology, ophthalmology, orthopedic surgery, otorhinolaryngology, pathology, plastic surgery, podiatry, thoracic/cardiovascular surgery, vascular surgery, and urology. They will lead the ongoing growth of CMED's surgical disciplines and support the academic development of teaching faculty throughout Michigan. This position will be based at the Saginaw, MI campus.

The Chair will lead, mentor, and motivate a team of committed and engaged faculty while ensuring that the high quality of the educational and research missions of the College is maintained. Working closely with the leadership team of CMU Medical Education Partners (CMEP) a graduate medical education consortium that includes CMU, Covenant HealthCare, and Ascension St. Mary's Hospital. CMEP is a medical community committed to enriching medical education and research. The Chair will support and enhance the growth and performance of CMEP's residency programs and be accountable for the academic development of the discipline and the performance of its faculty in academic and research endeavors. To accomplish this mission, the chair will work to enhance the community partners in hospitals and physician practices within the discipline. Making recommendations for rank, appointments, reappointments, and promotions.

A qualified and licensed M.D. or D.O., the Chair will have a demonstrated record of academic leadership and active clinical practice in a relevant surgical specialty. With established credentials and experience in clinical practice, medical education, leadership, and research, they will bring a commitment to academic excellence and mission and foster a culture that promotes and supports research and scholarly activity and thrives upon community engagement. The Chair will be collaborative, an excellent communicator at all levels, and with outstanding leadership skills and a commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion, can mentor and engage clinicians, faculty, and community partners.
