Novartis is advancing cutting-edge science, starting with our proprietary gene therapy for the treatment of spinal muscular atrophy (SMA). We are in the midst of an incredible journey and are looking for passionate individuals to join us on this important mission.
Novartis is dedicated to developing and commercializing novel treatments for patients suffering from rare and life-threatening neurological genetic diseases. Our initial product is a proprietary gene therapy approved by the US Food and Drug Administration for the treatment of pediatric patients with SMA. In addition to developing a treatment for SMA, Novartis also plans to develop other novel treatments for rare neurological diseases, including Rett syndrome and a Friedreich’s ataxia.

The Neuroscience Disease Area at Novartis is looking for an experienced Scientist with knowledge of neuroscience and histology, to perform tissue-based analysis in support of discovery and validation of disease relevant targets and pathways at the San Diego campus primarily focusing on gene therapies.

What you'll be doing:
• Perform high level tasks and play a lead role in animal studies including colony management, dosing, executing in vivo experiments under limited supervision of scientists, and tissue collection related to existing and pipeline products.
• Performs high-level tasks necessary for the husbandry and study of rodent models of disease such as animal identification by marking, breeding, and collection of tissue samples for protein, DNA, or RNA analysis. Plays a lead role and oversees day to day activities of other Research Associates.
• Establish protocols for behavioral studies and execute behavioral testing.
• Partner with lead scientists in research and development to validate, characterize, and distribute mouse models that directly address drug discovery and program validation.
• Work interactively with research and development team to validate, characterize, and distribute mouse models that directly address drug discovery and program validation.
• Executes, tracks, and manages genotyping.
• Leads research associates to organize, schedule and execute experimental work.
• Examine data and prepare technical reports, summaries, protocols, and quantitative analysis, ensuring experiments are well documented and comply with regulatory requirements. Present data to internal project teams. Field questions from research associates and escalate to scientific leadership as necessary. Assist in troubleshooting.
• Maintain and ensure safe laboratory environment and work practices. Follow standard operating procedures (SOP) and IACUC protocols. Help to maintain laboratory.
• Work collaboratively across a dynamic scientific environment.
• Other related duties as assigned.

Minimum Requirements

What you'll bring to the role:
• Bachelor's degree in biomedical research, neuroscience, animal behavior or animal sciences with 4 years related experience or 7 years of equivalent education/experience may be accepted.
• 5 years’ experience in rodent handling.
• Excellent oral and written communication skills.
• Proficiency with standard in vivo techniques in rodents, including dosing and sampling routes (e.g., po, ip, sc, iv dosing; cardiac bleeds; necropsy and organ/tumor harvest).
• Preferred - Experience with transcardiac perfusion.
• Preferred - Experience characterizing rodent models of various human diseases with behavioral testing.
• Preferred - Experience with survival and stereotactic surgeries.
• Preferred - Previous industry experience.
