Chemical Biology/Chemical Proteomics Scientist

Job ID: req3370
Employee Type: exempt full-time
Division: Cancer Research Technology Program
Facility: Frederick: ATRF
Location: 8560 Progress Dr, Frederick, MD 21701 USA

The Frederick National Laboratory is a Federally Funded Research and Development Center (FFRDC) sponsored by the National Cancer Institute (NCI) and operated by Leidos Biomedical Research, Inc. The lab addresses some of the most urgent and intractable problems in the biomedical sciences in cancer and AIDS, drug development and first-in-human clinical trials, applications of nanotechnology in medicine, and rapid response to emerging threats of infectious diseases.

Accountability, Compassion, Collaboration, Dedication, Integrity and Versatility; it's the FNL way.

PROGRAM DESCRIPTION

The Cancer Research Technology Program (CRTP) develops and implements emerging technology, cancer biology expertise and research capabilities to accomplish NCI research objectives. The CRTP is an outward-facing, multi-disciplinary hub purposed to enable the external cancer research community and provides dedicated support to NCI's intramural Center for Cancer Research (CCR). The dedicated units provide expertise in electron microscopy, protein characterization, mass spectrometry, protein expression, optical microscopy, and genomics. These research efforts are an integral part of CCR at the Frederick National Laboratory for Cancer Research (FNLCR), where CRTP scientists work collaboratively with intramural NCI investigators to provide research technologies and expertise.

KEY ROLES/RESPONSIBILITIES

The Chemical Biology/Chemical Proteomics Scientist will:
Carry out mass spectrometry focused chemical biology experiments from experimental design to data analysis.
Develop new chemical proteomics methods focusing on reactive probes, posts translational modification detection/quantification and global chemical proteomics profiling.
Perform daily operation and maintenance of LC-MS systems.
Perform data analysis pertaining to mass spectrometry based chemical biology experiments, spanning raw mass spectrum search to bioinformatics analysis.
Train chemical biology fellows in mass spectrometry-based sample processing, LC/MS equipment operation and date analysis using different software's and methods.
Interact closely with Chemical Biology Laboratory Investigators and fellows in designing and executing chemical biology experiments.

BASIC QUALIFICATIONS

To be considered for this position, you must minimally meet the knowledge, skills, and abilities listed below:
Possession of a Ph.D. degree in biochemistry, chemistry, analytical chemistry, or other related disciplines. Degree must be from an accredited college or university according to the Council for Higher Education Accreditation (CHEA).
Foreign degrees must be evaluated for U.S. equivalency.
In addition to the education, a minimum of 2 years of post-graduate experience in mass spectrometry-based proteomics.
Strong background in general and chemical biology proteomics sample processing.
Mass spectrometry operation, trouble shooting, QC and standardization for proteomics workflow.
Experience using MS software suites for proteomics workflow analysis.
Ability to obtain and maintain a security clearance.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

Candidates with these desired skills will be given preferential consideration:
Strong understanding of the chemical biology and chemical proteomics mass spectrometry pipeline from research question to sample preparation, mass spectrometry data acquisition to data analysis and to be able to utilize that background to carry out complex chemical biology/chemical proteomics experiments.
Strong background in developing new and innovative methods in chemical biology and chemical proteomics, linking together utilization of reactive chemical probes, chemical biology sample processing, mass spectrometry data acquisitions and data analysis.
Strong communication skills.
