Position:
The University of Minnesota College of Veterinary Medicine is accepting applications for a faculty position in Veterinary Anesthesia and Pain Medicine at the rank of assistant, associate, or full Professor with immediate availability. Positions may be full or part-time, tenure or clinical track. Applications are open and will remain open until the position is filled.Duties:
Primary duties include clinical case management and supervision of small and large animal patients in the Veterinary Medical Center, including the small animal hospital, large animal hospital, and the equine center. Our team provides anesthetic care to exotic and zoo animals through a partnership with the Como Zoo. Teaching duties include clinical teaching of fourth year veterinary students, interns, and residents, plus didactic and laboratory teaching of 2nd and 3rd year students in the DVM curriculum. We regularly provide continuing education for our technical staff, so participation in training programs for anesthesia technicians and mentorship of new hires is also expected. Duties also include providing consultation to colleagues for in-house patients, as well as for our referring veterinary community. Development of, or participation in clinical or basic research is expected. The anesthesia service offers 24h on-call availability, and the successful candidate will be expected to share backup on-call duties with the other faculty members. Currently, the majority of backup on-call is handled via phone and the on-call shifts contribute to clinical % effort. The total clinical % effort for this position is negotiable.
Qualifications

Requirements:
Candidates must have a DVM or equivalent degree along with advanced training in veterinary anesthesiology and pain medicine. Preference will be given to individuals who are board-certified by the American College of Veterinary Anesthesia and Analgesia (ACVAA) or European College of Veterinary Anaesthesia and Analgesia (ECVAA). However, applicants who have successfully completed an ACVAA or ECVAA Anesthesia residency or that are currently in training are also encouraged to apply. Evidence of outstanding interpersonal skills and teamwork mentality, and the potential to develop collaborative research is highly desirable. We seek a colleague that is excited about generating new knowledge in the field of veterinary anesthesia and pain medicine and delivering outstanding care to our patients and customers, through cohesiveness, teamwork, and leadership. About the Department

Team & Service:
We are currently a vibrant team of 5 DACVAAs, 4 residents, and 13 certified technicians, 4 of which are VTS-Anesthesia. We provide anesthetic and perioperative care to a robust caseload (over 4,000 cases annually), which brings a plethora of professional opportunities for career advancement through participation in and development of novel procedures and techniques. We also work closely with the local zoos, the University of Minnesota Raptor Center, the University of Minnesota Research Animal Resources, the Anesthesiology Department at the Medical School and other organizations such as the local biomedical industry. Our team works collaboratively with all other specialties in the Veterinary Medical Center to deliver sedation, pain management and anesthetic care to patients, as well as consultation on sedation, anesthesia and analgesia for both our in-house colleagues and referring veterinarians. The hospital is well equipped with multiparameter monitors, anesthesia workstations complete with spirometry and ventilation modes allowing for tailored ventilation strategies, taphonius for large animal anesthesia, and ultrasound machines dedicated to regional anesthesia techniques.Teaching is one of the team's main focus areas and it includes classroom and laboratory teaching to 2nd and 3rd year veterinary students, and clinical teaching to 4th year students and other house officers. Our curriculum aligns with the entrustable professional activities defined by the Competency Based Veterinary Education initiative from the AAVMC. Our didactic teaching is a mix of classical format lectures and active learning activities meant to enable our students to develop skills such as integration, communication, collaboration, clinical reasoning, and problem solving. We also have a strong residency training program that is focused on didactic and clinical training that maintains our tradition of excellence (total of 24 resident graduates, a majority of them also with MS or PhD, and most passing ACVAA boards exam on first attempt) while still providing desirable work-life balance for residents and mentors.
Research is an area full of opportunities and collaborative research is an important aspect of this position. For those with strong research interests, there are grant writing workshops, support in handling the press, and feedback on internal grants. For clinical research, there is a Clinical Investigation Center that performs clinical trials as designed by an investigator including those that require Good Clinical Practice designation. There are many collaboration opportunities with the colleges of Medicine, Public Health, Dentistry, Nursing, and Pharmacy. Our Anesthesia and Pain Medicine research program is currently funded by multiple grants from internal sources, foundations (AKC, Morris Animal Foundation) and the National Institutes of Health (NINDS, NIDA). Our research team is additionally composed of 1 PhD student and 2 postdoctoral associates. Work-Life Balance:

* Time spent off the clinic floor is flexible such that working from home is encouraged if otherwise not required to be physically present at the workplace.
* We aim for a 4-day clinical work week and faculty do not provide any primary emergency duty. The majority of backup on-call is handled via phone and the on-call shifts are counted towards clinical % effort. Financial compensation is currently provided if the faculty is physically needed in the hospital for emergency support.
* The UMN has floating holidays often incorporated near Christmas and New Year, commonly creating 4 day weekends. The hospital decreases caseload between Christmas and New Years to urgent and emergent cases allowing more faculty and staff time off during the holidays.
* Faculty are allowed to bring dogs to their offices which decreases stress levels.
