Salary

Salary Range: $45,000 for 9 months (Sept 1, 2023- May 31, 2023) and per lab for summer teaching

Hours per Week

Exempt Position: This is a full time, Fixed-Term Track (FTT) position with an expected period of appointment from 09/01/2023-08/31/2024. Appointment will be reviewed on an annual basis for renewal.

    Essential Functions

    Full time, Fix-term track (non-tenure track) position as an instructor/laboratory coordinator for the immunology teaching laboratory. Instruction duties may also include laboratories for introductory microbiology, upper level microbiology or other labs and lectures depending on the candidate's expertise. The duties associated with the position include, teaching, maintaining course Blackboard/Canvas sites online, general laboratory maintenance, stocking of supplies and equipment, mentoring teaching assistants and student technicians, and collaborating with faculty to advance the laboratory curriculum. The Lecturer will uphold and enforce all laboratory safety rules and policies as required by law. The Lecturer must be available to teach day and evening sections.

    In addition, candidates that have experience directing course-based undergraduate research experiences (CURE) are encouraged to apply. Opportunities exist to develop a CURE in conjunction with the research interests of existing UTSA faculty, or to develop a CURE in the candidate's area of expertise. For fulltime employment, duties could be split between directing a CURE and teaching regular laboratory sections.

    Primary duties:
  • Serving as coordinator for the undergraduate immunology teaching laboratory.
  • Teaching immunology-related courses and labs.
  • Revise laboratory curriculum to align with current practices and advances in the immunology field.
  • Work professionally and collegially with other faculty to advance and improve course content.
  • Incorporate active or experiential learning or other evidence-based pedagogy.
  • Directly supervise and contribute to the training of laboratory teaching assistants.
  • Maintaining lab space, supplies, and equipment. Perform other duties as assigned

    Required Qualifications

    • M.S. in biological sciences or closely related field with 18 hours of graduate-level course work, preferably related to the Microbiology and Immunology field by date of hire.

      Preferred Qualifications
      • Experience in research-based immunology techniques, such as ELISA, antibody purification, Western blot, flow cytometry, etc.
      • Familiarity with IACUC and animal models
      • Evidence of excellence in teaching at a post-secondary or higher education level (summary of student evaluations)
      • Prior experience coordinating university-level teaching laboratories
      • Evidence of instructional development (details of course development)
      • Proficiency with Blackboard or Canvas
