The University of Minnesota - College of Veterinary Medicine (UMN-CVM) is excited to advertise for a Medical Oncologist (board certified or board-eligible by the ACVIM or ECVIM) to join our dynamic Oncology team. The successful candidate will join the Comparative Animal Cancer Care and Research Program as a team member. The Animal Cancer Care and Research (ACCR) Program integrates resources from the College of Veterinary Medicine and the University of Minnesota's Masonic Cancer Center, with more than 60 affiliated investigators. The team strives to advance clinical care, research, training, and teaching in a supportive and collaborative academic environment. The UMN-CVM is an exceptional place to develop and grow as a clinician, scholar, leader, and teacher.The UMN-CVM announces an outstanding opportunity for a contract (non-tenure, clinical) track full time (100% appointment) faculty position in Oncology at the rank of Assistant, Associate, or Full Professor. Rank will be dependent upon qualifications and experience. Options exist for an annually renewable or multi-year contract.The successful candidate will join a diverse, enthusiastic, and forward-thinking team of faculty, residents, and researchers and will have the opportunity to be a driving force in its expansion. The Oncology team is currently composed of 2 ACVIM-Oncology board certified faculty, 1 ACVR-Radiation Oncology board certified faculty who is also an ACVIM-Oncology Diplomate, 3 collaborative faculty members in the Veterinary Clinical Sciences Department focusing on basic science cancer research, 4 medical oncology residents, 4 medical oncology technicians, 3 radiation therapy technicians, and one veterinary technician assistant. The percentage of time allocated for clinical service, teaching, and research is negotiable depending upon applicant interest and goals. Other job responsibilities include participation in clinical research, residency training, scholarly activities, personal development and discipline/non-discipline related service to the CVM and other veterinary-related professional organizations. Primary duties will be determined through negotiations with the Department Chair and are dependent on the candidate's professional goals and primary specialty training. Clinical Oncology Services: The UMN-CVM Clinical Oncology Team provides comprehensive, compassionate care and sees a large and diverse caseload making the VMC an ideal location for a progressive clinician interested in clinical trials. Clinicians in the UMN-CVM Clinical Oncology Team are supported by radiology, small animal surgery, surgical pathology, clinical pathology, and anesthesia and routinely collaborate with internal medicine, cardiology, emergency and critical care, neurology, and dermatology. Medical oncology works collaboratively from a large, windowed office. There is abundant space for clinical work, with an adjacent, dedicated, low-traffic chemotherapy administration room, cytology screening room, and student/resident rounds space. The oncology team is supported by highly skilled veterinary technicians, many of whom are cross trained in other specialty areas. The VMC currently has a Varian iX with electron (6-12MeV) and photon (6MV) capability with on board kV CT and EPID. Cases are treated with clinical setups, 3DCRT, IMRT, and/or SBRT. Current software includes MIM Maestro contouring/image registration, Pinnacle treatment planning, and Mosaiq record-and delivery software. In vivo dosimetry is provided on site with use of an OSLD reader. The service also has a Strontium-90 probe for clinical use. We have purchased a new Varian EDGE linear accelerator with 6MV and 6-15MeV capability and is outfitted with a high definition MLC, high intensity mode (flattening free filter [FFF] mode), 6-degrees of freedom couch, and kV imaging system. The EDGE will also come with integrated software that includes Eclipse, ARIA and Velocity to allow for flexible and customized radiation therapy planning and delivery (clinical setups, 3DCRT, IMRT, VMAT, SBRT/SRT, SRS) suitable to the wide array of cases. A ten year service contract will ensure uninterrupted and consistent hardware and software support. Installation of the new unit is underway. To provide superior cancer imaging, the VMC has upgraded its 3.0 Tesla MRI scanner and has purchased a 128-slice cardiac gated CT scanner to be installed Spring 2023. Scholarly Opportunities: The Animal Cancer Care and Research (ACCR) Program is one of only four comparative oncology programs nationwide in a campus that shares both a college of veterinary medicine (CVM-UMN) and an NCI-designated comprehensive cancer center (Masonic Cancer Center). It is the only one of its kind nationally that is housed and administered jointly between these units. The Masonic Cancer Center provides extensive and cutting-edge shared resources to advance our studies. The University of Minnesota is one of the nation's top public research universities and houses the VMC on the St. Paul Campus, which is located within a 10 minute campus connector ride from the UMN Medical School and the Masonic Cancer Center. The UMN Brain Tumor Program offers cutting-edge therapies developed through collaborations between veterinary specialists and medical researchers, and is the leading program in the Nation for comparative oncology brain cancer research. There are many opportunities for collaborative research within the CVM and across the five units of the Health Sciences Education Center, namely The Schools of Medicine, Pharmacy, Public Health, Nursing, and Dentistry as well as the Masonic Cancer Center. Intramural funding opportunities, such as the Comparative Medicine Signature Program, and the CVM Resident and Graduate Student Grants program, as well as extramural funding opportunities are available. Support to investigators conducting research is provided by the UMN-CVM Clinical Investigation Center (CIC). The CIC is an independent unit housed within the VMC that provides infrastructure and technical support for veterinary preclinical and clinical studies in a GLP- and GCP-compliant environment. The CIC team includes the center Director (a medical oncologist), a DVM Research Manager, five research technicians and a veterinary technician assistant. Numerous resources, including abundant intramural funding, career development opportunities through the Clinical and Translational Science Institute (CTSI), scientific writing courses, and other scholarship opportunities are available for junior faculty to establish exciting collaborative and clinical research experiences. There is also an extensive support network through the CVM Research Office to assist in the identification and submission of intramural and extramural grant applications. Teaching and Training: The UMN-CVM Oncology Team program is currently training 4 medical oncology residents with activities including weekly Journal Club, Cytology Rounds, Grand Rounds, and Surgery-Oncology-Pathology Rounds. Instructional activities include clinical training of DVM students and house officers, and the provision of didactic lectures in the CVM Veterinary and Graduate School curriculums as well as state-wide veterinary communities. Support and instruction for teaching is provided by the CVM Academic and Student Affairs Office and the Center for Educational Innovation (including the Early Career Teaching and Learning Program). Applied research opportunities in the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning (SoTL) allow interested faculty to assess the impact of new and innovative teaching practices. Leadership training is available through the annual CVM LEADS program. Opportunities exist to attend regular Masonic Cancer Center seminars and UMN Medical School Oncology Rounds, including those focused on Musculoskeletal Oncology, Sarcomas, Solid Tumors, Brain Tumors, and Cancer Epidemiology. Qualifications

Minimum qualifications include: DVM/VMD or equivalent veterinary degree, successful completion of Oncology residency with eligibility for, or certification by, the American College of Veterinary Internal Medicine-Oncology and evidence of outstanding clinical and interpersonal skills. Preference will be given to candidates with a history and interest in collaborative patient care, comparative clinical research, veterinary student instruction, and resident training.
