The Computational Biology & Machine Learning Group within the Genomics & Data Science Organization at Spark Therapeutics is seeking an engaged and passionate Data Science Intern with a focus on bioinformatics and computational biology to participate in and support projects involving omics and other high-dimensional data across the Research & Technology Organization. Working with the senior colleagues in the group, he/she will be responsible for:

  • Analysis and interpretation of high-dimensional data, including genomic, transcriptomic, and proteomic datasets
  • Developing and maintaining custom bioinformatics tools, e.g., Shiny apps to analyze and visualize internal and external data for the Spark research community
  • Engaging in cross-functional discussions, providing conceptual input in experimental and study design, and serving as subject matter expert in bioinformatics
  • Summarizing, visualizing, and presenting analyses and findings to key stakeholders Work with Bioinformatics team and broader Spark scientists to gather requirements for capabilities, i.e. workflows and/or application endpoints
  • Validate and document all builds and utilize reproducible workflows

Education and Experience Requirements

  • BS/MS in Computer science, Computational Biology, Bioinformatics, or related disciplines
  • Experience with NGS tools (BWA, Samtools, fastqc), data science tools and languages (R/Python), and the linux operating system
  • Experience with R Shiny and application development
  • Demonstrable track record in the core competency areas: Scripting/programming, plotting and visualization, NGS workflows


Key Skills, Abilities, and Competencies

  • Working knowledge of one or more common data science languages such as Python, R, SPARQL, SQL
  • Experience with R Studio/Posit ecosystem tools such as Shiny, tidyverse, and Connect
  • Background and skills in building light apps (Shiny/Flask/Django) etc.. for visualization and analyses
  • Familiarity using bioinformatics workflow technologies such as SnakeMake, NextFlow, Docker
  • Strong familiarity with core concepts in molecular biology and related lab technologies
  • Track record of following best practices of coding, version control (Git), code documentation, and reproducible research
  • Proven ability to work independently & in a collaborative group setting
  • Self-motivated to learn and develop new methodologies, manage multiple analysis pipelines simultaneously, keep accurate records, follow instructions, and comply with company policies.
  • Excellent communication skills (both oral and written)
