College of the Arts

The College of the Arts (COTA) at California State University, Long Beach invites applications for the position of Associate Dean for Faculty, Curriculum, and Instruction. Reporting to the COTA Dean, we seek a collaborative colleague with strong communication skills, a demonstrated commitment to student success, faculty mentorship and retention, and to the development and implementation of curriculum that cultivates anti-racism, inclusion, diversity, equity, and access, and inspires invention.

ABOUT US:

The College of the Arts (COTA) is California's largest and most comprehensive publicly funded school for the arts, with approximately 4,000 undergraduate and graduate students. It includes the Departments of Dance, Design, Film and Electronic Arts, and Theatre Arts, as well as the School of Art, the Bob Cole Conservatory of Music, the Carolyn Campagna Kleefeld Contemporary Art Museum, the Center for Contemporary Ceramics, and the Carpenter Performing Arts Center.

Composed of generative and performing artists, educators, and scholars, COTA's faculty bring research and creative discovery to students in classrooms, labs, studios, and individually mentored projects, and is committed to empowering the artists, scholars, educators, audiences, and advocates who will shape the culture of the twenty-first century.

Required Qualifications
  • A terminal degree or equivalent professional experience in the arts, design, media arts and/or performing arts.
  • Successful university teaching experience, service, and a record of scholarly/creative activity suitable for a tenured, full professor faculty appointment in one of the disciplines in the College of the Arts.
  • Demonstrated effectiveness in a leadership position (with at least three years of experience), or equivalent position in an academic institution (i.e., Associate Dean, Department Chair, Associate Chair, Program Director, or Graduate Advisor/Graduate Program Coordinator).
  • Demonstrated experience with curriculum development and assessment
  • Demonstrated experience with personnel
  • Experience with budget management
  • Demonstrated commitment to anti-racism, inclusion, diversity, equity, and access
  • Demonstrated evidence of working successfully with a diverse student, faculty, and staff population

Preferred Qualifications
  • Demonstrated experience with personnel procedures (e.g.: tenure and promotion, faculty appointment and evaluations) in a department/program, college, and university
  • Demonstrated experience with a collective bargaining environment
  • Knowledge of, or familiarity with, academic program review, including accreditation processes in the disciplines within the college
  • Demonstrated personnel management; evidence of supporting and advancing the work of faculty and/or staff through mentorship
  • Demonstrated experience collaborating and coordinating effectively with colleagues in other academic/campus units
  • Experience with technology-supported teaching environments and pedagogical approaches
  • Demonstrated experience with faculty research, grant, and fellowship proposals and contracts

Duties
  • Oversee curriculum development and review processes. Steward new and revised curriculum that reflects the diversity of our student body, the field, and the traditions and innovations of historically marginalized groups, with pedagogical integrity.
  • Develop and promote cross-curricular and cross-disciplinary programs to create greater connection between practice and theory
  • Manage development of courses and programs including examining the impact of resource related issues in concert with the Dean
  • Effectively implementation of the Collective Bargaining Agreement, particularly in areas related to hiring, workload assignment, professionalism, discipline, and evaluation
  • Mentor faculty, oversee faculty development opportunities in alternative pedagogical modalities including hybrid/on-line learning
  • Manage Lecturer appointment and evaluation processes
  • Support the Dean with the faculty reappointment, tenure, and promotion process, and foster successful faculty retention-particularly for faculty from historically marginalized populations
  • Assist and work closely with Department Chairs, and in consultation with the Dean, to manage and resolve issues related to curriculum, teaching assignments, and personnel
  • Represent the College/Dean on relevant committees, councils, and at COTA events
  • Develop international curricular opportunities in collaboration with the College of Professional and Continuing Education
  • Support COTA with the successful collaborative execution of strategic priorities
