Advertised Job Summary:
The faculty of the Department of African American Studies (AFAM) at the University of South Carolina, Columbia campus, invites applications for the Director of Undergraduate Studies and Instructor, a full time, professional-track position to begin August 16, 2023. This position is a 9-month appointment with a teaching load of 8 courses for the academic year. Course releases may be provided in lieu of administrative service. This is an annual appointment that may be renewed contingent upon Dean's approval, satisfactory performance, departmental needs, and the availability of funding.
This position will also provide administrative support and serve as the Director of Undergraduate Studies in the Department of African American Studies, with responsibility as the administrator of the African American Studies B.A. program. Administering this program will require working within the Department, students, and representing the AFAM undergraduate program to the University and beyond. Additional duties of this position will include, but not be limited to: chairing the African American Studies Curriculum Committee, including preparing agendas and writing minutes; overseeing the work of office staff on African American Studies undergraduate program tasks; maintaining records of the AFAM undergraduate departmental practices and policy; identifying short- and long-term goals for the program and support their implementation; all functions and operations related to course scheduling, course development proposals, cross listing, to maintain the academic quality of courses and curricula, through assessment and other means; promote the major and ensure adequate enrollment of courses; preparation and updating of the African American Studies undergraduate catalog copy; promoting the undergraduate initiatives of the department by facilitating events for majors and potential majors and by serving, when needed, as a liaison to the Department's clubs or honor societies; fostering opportunities for community among African American Studies majors both within and beyond the classroom; review and approval of applications for graduation; preparing and submitting weekly, monthly, quarterly, and annual reports as requested, and other duties as assigned.
Required Education and Experience:
Candidates must have earned a Ph.D. in Curriculum and Instruction, with Master and Bachelor of Arts in African American Studies and English Literature; a minimum of 5 years' administrative experience in advising undergraduates, course and classroom assignments, and serving as a liaison to campus programs and departments across a University campus. Must have experience teaching AFAM, English, and Gender Studies.
