The Department of Medicine, University of Colorado, School of Medicine is seeking an outstanding leader and manager to serve as Vice Chairperson of Research.

The Department of Medicine (DOM) at the University of Colorado is world-renowned for excellence in all academic domains. Nature of Work

With the Department of Medicine Chair, the Vice Chairperson of Research will develop strategies to promote programmatic and interdisciplinary initiatives in basic, clinical, translational, and health services research. The scope of this position will include expanding interdepartmental research, partnering with the Vice Chair of Faculty Development and Mentorship to develop a mentorship targeting DOM research faculty, and advising the Department Chair on research space and infrastructure. The Vice Chairperson of Research will also be responsible for developing and launching a strategy that will raise the Department's national rankings in research.

The ideal candidate will hold the degree of MD (with board-certification in internal medicine or a subspecialty) or a PhD in laboratory-based bench research, or both. They should have an outstanding record of achievement and national prominence in basic/translational/clinical research. The ideal candidate must also possess leadership and managerial experience running research programs in a comparable academic department or healthcare setting according to the details below. The candidate is expected to be a scientist with a solid track record of extramural funding.

Examples of Work Performed
Partner with Department and Division leadership to develop the Department of Medicine research mission, strategic plan, tactics for achieving the goals of the strategic plan and metrics for measuring success. This will include efforts to grow research efforts, extend them into novel areas that advance health care, and expand the NIH and overall funding portfolio. Grow and promote interdepartmental, interdisciplinary and programmatic research and funding within the Department of Medicine. Partner with the Vice Chair of Faculty Development and Mentorship and the Vice Chair of Education to develop a mentorship program and opportunities for development of research-focused faculty. These efforts will include developing and refining novel early and mid-career support programs, bridge funding programs, exploring PSTP program and other efforts to ensure recruitment, retention and success for physician scientists, laboratory scientists, and other researchers within the DOM. Exert supervision and partner with the Director of the DOM Research Office in overseeing existing programs and developing new initiatives. Partner with DOM and SOM efforts to expand diversity and inclusion in DOM research. Partner with leaders in informatics and innovations within DOM and the campus to expand the role these critical fields play in DOM research. Partner closely with DOM and SOM Quality Improvement (QI) efforts to help integrate research in quality improvement and patient safety in order to advance medicine and improve patient outcomes. Enhance the communication of research activities and findings in DOM. Manage the research component of the weekly DOM Research and Innovation conference. Lead an annual departmental research retreat to continually evolve the DOM research strategy and tactics. Implement and develop a research advisory council inclusive of investigators in health services, basic, clinical, and translational research across DOM Divisions to develop strategy, mission and vision for DOM research.

Expected FTE
The expected FTE for this position will range from 25-50% funded by the Department of Medicine. The ideal candidate will be expected to be active in their respective research or clinical areas within which they will spend the balance of their time.

Salary and Benefits:

The hiring range for this position at the associate professor level has been established at $155,000 - $243,000 depending on degree. The hiring range for this position at the professor level as been established at $160,000 - $285,000 depending on degree.

The salary of the finalist selected for this role will be set based on a variety of factors, including but not limited to, internal equity, experience, education, specialty and training. In addition to salary, the Vice Chairperson of Research will oversee and have access to resources and financial commitments dedicated for research within the DOM including early career funding program, bridge funding program(s), internal R56 funding program, research intensive faculty program, outstanding scholar program, among others.

The above salary range (or hiring range) represents the University's good faith and reasonable estimate of the range of possible compensation at the time of posting.

Minimum Qualifications
