Duties and Responsibilities :
PURPOSE:
Serve as Assistant Director of Bands and works within the parameters of the University policy and under the specific guidance of the Assistant/Associate Professor of Instrumental Music; Director of University Bands in the Department of Fine and Performing Arts. Provides assistance with The Symphony of Soul (SOS), University/Jazz band, and related ensembles.

DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Assist the Director in the development of musicianship and performance etiquette.
  • Design and develop field shows and precision marching drills.
  • Orchestrate and arrange music for various ensembles.
  • Conduct and rehearse various ensembles.
  • Oversee Inventory Control (i.e. repairs and upkeep of instruments, equipment, and uniforms)
  • Respond to requests from the Department Chairperson, meets and provide information and reports; and meet as necessary with the administration, such as Dean, Provost, and President.
  • Assist with logistics and preparation for band travel and performance.
  • Innovative approach to pedagogy and curriculum.
  • Experience teaching and recruiting graduate and undergraduate applied composition students.
  • An ongoing commitment to scholarly/creative activity in composition, as demonstrated through performance
  • Assist with recruitment and retention. of bands, SOS
  • Organize and maintain music archives for various ensembles.
  • Assist in the marketing and promotion of University Bands.
  • Develop and manage fundraising efforts.
  • Teach applied courses in the instrumental area as well as courses in music and/or music technology as needed.
  • Advise music and/or music technology students.
  • Participate with the Department of Fine and Performing Arts with programs, curriculum, courses, and attends departmental meetings.
  • Respond to student, administrative, and public needs, in accordance with the recommendation of the Director of University Bands.
  • Provides service to the DFPA, CAS, and university in terms of committees and other needs as required for full-time status, tenure, and promotion.
  • Continues with research in music.
  • Travel for the purpose of performance obligations, recruitment, and other band-related functions.
  • Assists with conducting University Bands, Symphony of Soul at all convocations, commencement, and other university events, DFPA performances, and ceremonies as required.
  • In addition to teaching assignments and based on candidate strengths and school needs the position may include, but not limited to, conducting additional ensembles; maintaining collaborative relationships with public and private schools, BSU/DFPA alumni, and other community partners; actively recruiting, retaining, and developing leaders from music majors and non-music majors at all levels; and performing other duties dependent upon candidate qualifications and university needs.
  • The successful candidate will participate fully in departmental and university service and maintain an active scholarly agenda as an assistant director/instructor of national prominence.

Experience:

  • At least three or more years of successful and specialized experience in March, Pep, and Concert Bands at the university/college and undergraduate level; HBCU band and music teaching experience at an HBCU/HBI is highly desirable.


  • Successful university teaching experience in applied music composition; successful work with marching bands and others.

  • Evidence of successful publication and performance of original compositions in a variety of musical settings.

  • Ability to teach diverse areas of music composition, instrumental music, and band courses; music composition for music and music technology students. Ability to direct/coach contemporary music ensemble.

  • Demonstrated commitment to diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging in teaching.

Education:
• Requires an advanced degree such as an MFA, MM, or terminal degree, PHD in music or a related field.
Knowledge Skills and Abilities :
Must demonstrate knowledge in the development of musicianship; ability to design and develop collegiate-level field shows and precision drills.

Ability to orchestrate and arrange music; ability to conduct and rehearse various ensembles; ability to oversee Inventory Control; ability to negotiate business transactions (travel, performances, etc.).

Ability to effectively recruit and retain band students; ability to organize and maintain music archives for various ensembles; demonstrated knowledge of marketing and promotion.

Ability to effectively develop and manage fundraising efforts; ability to teach applied courses in instrumental; other courses in music as designated and ability to effectively interact with the University professional community and students.

Must be a team player and work collaboratively with students, music faculty, departmental faculty, department chairperson, BSU administration, and personnel from other departments across the campus.

Should have the capacity and expertise to prioritize tasks and exercise good judgment in music choices for a variety of occasions, in which music is expected to be provided within the department and across the campus.
