The Weitzenhoffer Family College of Fine Arts Helmerich School of Drama at the University of Oklahoma seeks applicants for the Academic Director, rank of Full Professor, with a starting date of July 1, 2023. The successful candidate will lead an esteemed faculty and staff in a collegial and collaborative environment of shared governance and will support and expand the School's programs and facilitate excellence in teaching, research, creative activity, and learning. The candidate will teach classes and - depending on their strengths - participate in the School of Drama and/or University Theatre production season. The candidate will advocate and support the School of Drama faculty, students and staff collaborating on the University Theatre season. Must have proven success in recruitment of students and retention of students, staff, and faculty; the capacity to forge and maintain relationships within the university community and local community, including fostering professional relationships with artistic and educational communities within the region and across the nation and facilitate and nurture the relationship between School of Drama and the alumni body working in the profession around the world.
The University of Oklahoma Helmerich School of Drama delivers a conservatory style education with the benefits of a liberal arts environment housed within one of the premier institutions of higher learning in the Midwest. The School of Drama is widely recognized as one of the leading BFA training programs in Oklahoma and the nation. The School of Drama offers a BFA degree in the following seven emphasis areas: Performance, Dramaturgy, Scenic Design, Costume Design, Lighting Design, Stage Management, and Sound Design.
The Director of the Helmerich School of Drama will maintain and strengthen the national profile of the second oldest university dramatic training institution in the United States. The faculty, staff, and students of the School of Drama annually participate in 14-16 productions in five dedicated theatre spaces. The 12 full-time faculty are actively engaged in the profession and their scholarly fields. The 11 administrative and professional production staff members are essential to creating and maintaining aspects of the School of Drama and University Theatre production studios and spaces.
The Director of the Helmerich School of Drama is one of five Directors within the Weitzenhoffer Family College of Fine Arts and oversees the day-to-day administration of the School's academic units and co-curricular activities (such as the College of Fine Arts' productions and collaborations with School of Music, School of Musical Theatre, and School of Dance); manages the School's 11 administrative and production staff members; models professional ethics and best practices; and promotes inclusive excellence in the arts.
The Helmerich School of Drama is one of five schools in the Weitzenhoffer Family College of Fine Arts. These nationally ranked programs include the School of Drama, School of Dance, School of Musical Theatre, School of Visual Art and School of Music. The University of Oklahoma is a Carnegie-R1comprehensive public research university known for excellence in teaching, research, creative activities and community engagement serving the state, region and nation from three campuses. For the first time in history, the University of Oklahoma ranks first in the nation among both public and private universities in the enrollment of freshman National Merit Scholars, with 311scholars. Qualifications:
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS: Earned doctorate, MFA, or equivalent. The successful candidate will be a proven and respected leader who has demonstrated the highest standards of achievement in theatrical and academic disciplines and has demonstrated success in mentoring (student/staff/faculty), recruitment at all levels, managing large budgets, fundraising, and curriculum development.
DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS:The qualified candidate will have notable and distinguished prior experience as a Department/School of Drama (or Theatre) administrator (or the equivalent) and advocate and be a proven leader with excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
