Advertised Job Summary:
The College of Arts and Sciences invites applications and nominations for the position of Director of the Belle W. Baruch Institute for Marine and Coastal Sciences and Full Professor to begin August 16, 2023. This is a tenured faculty position that will guide and lead the Baruch Institute into its next phase. The Baruch Institute conducts research and supports education to improve the management of marine and coastal resources and advances basic science for the well-being of people and their environment. It was established in 1969 through the joint efforts of the University of South Carolina and the Belle W. Baruch Foundation. It consists of field laboratory facilities located on Hobcaw Barony, near Georgetown, SC and facilities on the university's main campus in Columbia, SC.
Reporting to the Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences, the successful candidate for the Director position will bring administrative experience in managing an interdisciplinary research program, and an understanding of the unique requirements and opportunities that a marine field station brings. We seek an individual who is internationally recognized and has a vibrant externally-funded research program, as well as demonstrated ability with fundraising or program development. The Baruch Institute Director will also have the opportunity to recruit additional tenure track faculty that will leverage the unique resources of the Institute for their research and educational programs.
The appointment will be at the rank of Full Professor, tenurable in a school/department within the College of Arts and Sciences.

The Baruch Institute has approximately fifteen full time staff members and professional track faculty, as well as institutional partnerships with the NOAA-funded North Inlet-Winyah Bay National Estuarine Research Reserve (NI-WB NERR) and the NERR Centralized Data Management Office. The marine field laboratory includes a ~22,000 sq ft laboratory building that has a research laboratory, a teaching laboratory/classroom, and administrative areas as well as a separate ~3,000 sq ft seawater laboratory. The Institute has eleven boats (14-23 ft) and vehicles for use in field research. The Kimbel Living and Learning Center on Hobcaw Barony provides lodging and conference facilities for the Institute. Additional facilities at the Columbia campus include a 1,400 sq ft seawater laboratory, administrative space, and meeting facility.
Located at the southern tip of the Waccamaw Neck, in Georgetown County, the marine field laboratory is situated near numerous beaches, coastal marshes, barrier islands, as well as inland rivers and forested wetlands. The beach resort of Pawleys Island is just to the north and the historic City of Georgetown, at the upper end of Winyah Bay, is just to the South. The Institute's facilities sit on the edge of the North Inlet Estuary, which represents the northern end of a stretch of some 60 miles of protected coastline extending south to the outskirts of the greater Charleston metropolitan area.
As the largest college at the UofSC, the College of Arts and Sciences is the intellectual, artistic, scientific, and instructional heart of the university. The college is home to award-winning scientists, scholars and teachers that span the arts, humanities, natural science, and social science disciplines. The college's 26 schools, departments, academic programs, and institutes offer 109 degrees to over 8,700 undergraduates and more than 850 graduate students. College faculty are consistently recognized both nationally and internationally for teaching and research excellence.
