Primary Purpose of Department:
Recruit, secure, and grow relationships with key industry partners, connect university resources, talent, and opportunities on a continuing basis.
Primary Purpose of Position:
The Associate Director plans and aligns activities to be consistent with Strategic Plans for UNC Charlotte and the Division of Research, the Charlotte region, and the state of North Carolina. The role is responsible for leading research, business development and relationship management activities with intended outcomes of successful industry partnerships.
Summary of Position Responsibilities:

  • Serve as the lead research partnerships recruiter and liaison for top university corporate prospects within the Transportation, Transformational Energy, Electrification, Advanced Mobility, Smart and Sustainable Cities, and Digital Engineering sectors.
  • Apply a rapport building process, including identifying corporate partners for collaborative research initiatives, particularly those related to large multidisciplinary or multi-investigator projects.
  • Collaborate with Office of Research Partnerships (ORP) and Division of Research staff, university academic leadership, faculty researchers, development officers, and corporate executives to create comprehensive goals and strategies to extend UNC Charlotte's strategic partnerships with corporations, SMBs, and other community and industry stakeholders.
  • Market and communicate Division of Research's and ORP value propositions.
  • Develop a broad working knowledge of University's capabilities; be a lead communicator and spokesperson for UNC Charlotte and Division of Research recruiting and growth opportunities.
  • Collaborate with development and constituency relationship teams to offer "one university" experience to partners.
Minimum Education/Experience:
Bachelor's degree.

Minimum of ten years of experience in commercial sales, business development, product management, product marketing, technology strategy, innovation management, and/or R&D in combination or in one of the following industries: Transportation, Transformational Energy, Electrification, Advanced Mobility, Smart and Sustainable Cities, or Digital Engineering.
Preferred Education, Knowledge, Skills and Experience:

  • Bachelor's degree in an engineering or physical sciences field. Advanced degree in related field a plus.
  • Successful, documented track record of meeting or exceeding goals / quotas.
  • Extensive decision-authority contacts within one or more of the listed industry sectors.
  • Entrepreneurial and dynamic individual within a commitment to advancing scientific research and innovation.
  • Working knowledge of scientific research and forming research partnerships with academic and/or other institutional research organizations preferred.
  • International business experience a plus.
