POSITION TITLE: Dean of Students
DIVISION: Student Life
REPORTS TO: Vice President of Student Life
Position Description:
The Dean of Students is a vital part of a strong Student Life team committed to helping students achieve their curricular and co-curricular goals. In providing visionary leadership within the Student Life program, this position will oversee the areas of student engagement, campus conduct, residence life, student leadership, and new student orientation; serve on departmental and college committees; provide leadership crisis response; collaborate across campus to develop and implement social and educational programming within the campus living-learning community; and assist in the development and growth of Student Life staff.
Remuneration:
The Dean of Students is a full-time, 12-month, live-in position with a competitive salary. Benefits include a comprehensive medical policy, free housing and meal plan, and optional participation in a matched retirement plan and optional dental plan.
Specifications/Qualifications:
* Master's Degree in Higher Education, Student Personnel, or related field required
* Previous professional (post-graduate) student life and supervisory experience required
* Experience with emergency response to on-campus situations
* Demonstrated skills in the following areas: supervision, organization, collaboration, crisis management, leadership,
teamwork, and assessment
* Knowledge of student development and leadership development
* Fluency in current research regarding college student affairs
* Ability to handle difficult situations
* Ability to lift 25 pounds
* Ability to climb multiple flights of stairs
Duties and Responsibilities:
Planning/Budgeting
The Dean of Students works with the Vice President of Student Life and all direct reports to establish goals and objectives for the Student Life program. Tasks include:
* Working with the Director of Institutional Research to ensure appropriate data availability
* Establish/facilitate periodic in-service programs for staff reflection and goal-setting
* Maintain awareness of research regarding best practices for student affairs programs at small colleges
* Ensure progress/completion of departmental goals
* Prepare/monitor annual budgets for departmental areas that ensure accomplishment of area goals/objectives
Staff Supervision
The Dean of Students directly supervises the Director of Counseling Services, Campus Safety Chief, College Chaplain and five Residence Hall Community Directors. Tasks include:
* Select, train, advise, motivate and evaluate staff
* Develop an attitude of cooperation and unity among staff members
* Create on-call schedules for professional staff
* Ensure that College policies and procedures for staff are met on a consistent basis
* Conduct regular group and individual staff meetings and provide periodic constructive performance and professional
feedback
Other Duties
* Serve in an administrative on-call rotation
* Serve on Student Life and College committees as assigned
* Serve on the Behavioral Intervention Team
* Assist Title IX Coordinator in managing Title IX cased including related investigations and hearings
* Participate in regular professional development opportunities
* Be a visible, active participant in campus life
* Assist with the preparation of various manuals, handbooks, and documents
* Coordinate Parent programs
* Chair the department's Collaborative team (Director-level staff)
* Be available for weekends, extended days, official College events, and emergencies as needed
* Perform other duties as assigned
