Position Summary The Munroe-Meyer Institute for Genetics and Rehabilitation (MMI) at the University of Nebraska Medical Center (UNMC) is accepting applications for a physical therapist with a proven track record of academic medical center leadership to serve as the Director of Physical Therapy (Academic Rank DOQ). The Director of Physical Therapy will provide leadership and oversight of all clinical, educational, and research programs within the department and is responsible for developing the strategic plan for delivery of physical therapy services in the state and region.Essential functions include:
  • Leading a team of 20+ talented pediatric physical therapists who provide early intervention, school-based, outpatient, Newborn Intensive Care Unit/developmental follow-up and interdisciplinary clinical services with a focus on populations who have intellectual and developmental disabilities (ID/D).
  • Building capacity for and supporting PT department training programs which include: entry level pediatric curriculum for DPT students in the College of Allied Health Professions, Department of Physical Therapy, graduate level courses, clinical affiliations for PT students at all levels of training, and an accredited ABPTRFE Clinical Residency Program in Pediatrics (accredited since 2010).
  • Providing guidance and support for a young team of researchers working within a suite of labs. These labs are equipped with a state-of-art Maker's Space, virtual reality lab and a variety of tools that assist in analyzing movement, motor learning paradigms, and intervention outcomes.
  • Working in partnership with the MMI Institute Director and Business Services on all clinical, research, staffing, program development, recruitment/hiring, budgetary, and philanthropic initiatives.
  • Working with the MMI Director of Business Services to monitor fiscal and budgetary performance of the physical therapy service lines.
  • Managing daily staffing, performance management, clinical competency, recruitment, and retention of physical therapy providers.
  • Working with financial and billing representatives to optimize physical therapy service reimbursement.
  • Increasing extramural grant funding within the department of physical therapy.
  • Fostering collaborative partnerships with all MMI departments, other educational institutions, and colleges on campus as well as across the community and state.

About MMI Physical Therapy: The department currently provides/co-coordinates the pediatric curriculum of the University of NE Medical Center entry-level doctoral program in the Division of PT Education and providing clinical rotation training to entry-level PT students. Other training includes an ABPTFRE-accredited pediatric residency program provided in conjunction with the Leadership Education in Neurodevelopmental and Related Disorders (LEND) program. Current research programs (both funded) examine the use of virtual reality in Hand Arm Bimanual Intensive Training (HABIT) and the START-Play early intervention approach for infants at risk of Cerebral Palsy. The Physical Therapy Department serves the Omaha and Bellevue Public Schools for educationally-related services, provides out-patient services to individuals with developmental disability throughout the lifespan, and serves infants in two Newborn Intensive Care Units in Omaha as well as in the Tracking Infant Statewide (TIPS) developmental follow-up program.

Required Qualifications
  • Post-professional Doctorate (preferred) with academic and administrative experience
  • Minimum of 5 years' clinical experience in the field of Pediatric Physical Therapy; pediatric clinical specialty certification desirable
  • Credentialed PT, eligible for licensure to practice in the state of NE
  • Experience with OR strong desire to nurture/support a clinical-translational, academic mission, post-secondary education; graduate coursework/committees, and pediatric PT residency program
  • Team builder interested in working collaboratively and creatively across disciplines to develop meaningful programs for children/families with disabilities, to advance pediatric PT clinical-translational research and to build graduate (post-entry level) curriculum related to ID/D
