Primary Responsibilities:
The Department of Visual and Performing Arts at Sul Ross State University seeks candidates for the position of Assistant Professor of Music and Director of Bands. This full-time, tenure-track appointment begins August 2023. Duties include directing the concert and pep bands; teaching applied brass, woodwind, and/or percussion lessons; and additional teaching duties as needed, determined by department needs and candidate strengths. Possible courses may include music theory, music history, ear training, instrumental education courses, and music appreciation. Active participation in recruiting, advising, and service to the University and community is expected. The successful candidate must hold a doctorate degree in music at the time of appointment, ABD considered. The Department is looking for a dynamic individual who will stay abreast of the latest developments in the music world and inspire non-majors to pursue a major or minor in Music. The ideal candidate is collaborative and has a strong interest in developing active partnerships with local and regional musicians and performing arts organizations. In addition to teaching, responsibilities include contributing to shared administrative and recruitment tasks, and active participation in departmental and/or college-wide committees. The ability to create inclusive and engaging learning environments for a diverse student body will be an important characteristic of the successful candidate. Experience working with first-generation students is highly desirable. The candidate hired for this position will be joining a program and department embarking upon a multi-million-dollar expansion and renovation of current fine arts facilities. Alpine and Marfa are arts-friendly communities, and the candidate will find supportive colleagues and appreciative peers throughout the region.
