Primary Purpose of Organizational Unit:
The Office of the Vice Chancellor for Research (OVCR) oversees, develops, supports, and grows UNC-Chapel Hill's $1 billion research enterprise. The offices reporting to the OVCR set strategic priorities for research, manage proposals and awards, provide research infrastructure, identify funding opportunities, develop research teams and partnerships, oversee regulatory compliance, and communicate the impact and value of the University's research enterprise. The OVCR enables research endeavors for faculty, students, and scholars; encourages interdisciplinary research collaboration across campus; and fosters expansion and diversification of the University's sponsored research portfolio by collaborating with foundations, federal agencies, corporations, and the state and federal governments. The Vice Chancellor for Research also oversees multiple pan-University, multidisciplinary research centers and institutes.
Position Summary:
Under the supervision of the Senior Associate Vice Chancellor for Research, the Director of Research Core Facilities will partner with the Office of the Vice Chancellor for Research, Office of Sponsored Research, as well as campus Schools and the College of Arts & Sciences to support and grow research core facilities. The Director will collaborate with campus partners to develop and implement new capabilities and business processes that are designed to streamline core management, rate development, business workflows and general core facility administration.
The Director will work with the Office of the Vice Chancellor to examine and identify opportunities to restructure core facility organizational structure for the purpose of achieving greater efficiency in core management. The Director will focus on opportunities to grow and market core facility capability for the purpose of increasing utilization. The Director will also partner with key stakeholders to develop strategy for equipment purchases as well as lifecycle management.
The Director will focus on increasing the utilization of the iLabs platfrom, identifying opportunities to further integrate iLabs with appropriate business processes at the University, and partner with the iLabs vendor and the Office of Research Information Systems (ORIS) to develop and deploy new reporting capabilities that will provide greater insight into how the University's core facilities function.
Minimum Education and Experience Requirements:
Relevant post-Baccalaureate degree required (or foreign degree equivalent); for candidates demonstrating comparable independent research productivity, will accept a relevant Bachelor's degree (or foreign degree equivalent) and 3 or more years of relevant experience in substitution. May require terminal degree and licensure.

* Extensive experience in academic research with a deep understanding of the needs of core facilities.
