The Division of Addiction Science, Prevention, and Treatment is the largest research-focused Division in the Department of Psychiatry with 9 research faculty and 15 federally funded grant awards among them. The Division also provides an unparalleled addiction research training and mentorship environment for medical students, residents, post-doctoral fellows, and junior faculty. The Division's research programs include basic science (i.e. genetics, epigenetics), human laboratory studies, medication and behavioral treatment development, deep brain stimulation, and clinical trials research, including affiliation with the NIAAA and NIDA Clinical Trials Networks. The Division is also known for research expertise in the effects of cannabis on neurocognition and health across the lifespan.

The Division of Addiction Science, Prevention and Treatment is comprised of three strong & inter-related components: Clinical/Treatment, Research, and Education/Training. The strong relationship between the Division's research and clinical programs facilitates & accelerates the pace at which research is translated into clinical practice. The Division's community- based medication assisted therapy program serves more than 1000 individuals throughout the Denver/Metro region. The 40-year-old Addiction Research Treatment and Services (ARTS; https://www.artstreatment.com) program for individuals with complex psychiatric and substance use disorders emerging from a prison setting has been a stalwart collaborator with the Division of Community Corrections and the Justice Department in Colorado. In total, the Division includes 31 faculty and an Addiction Fellowship program with funding for 3 fellows per year.

In collaboration with the University of Colorado Hospital, the Center for Dependency and Rehabilitation (CeDAR; https://www.cedarcolorado.org) has been ranked by Newsweek as the number one facility to receive substance abuse treatment in Colorado, particularly for those with a comorbid psychiatric disorder in Colorado. This year, CeDAR was ranked #2 nationally.
