Job Description:

Budget Title: Associate Dean (MP-3; Management Confidential)*

Salary: $195,000

The Thomas J. Watson College of Engineering and Applied Science at Binghamton University, one of the fastest growing engineering schools in the nation (with 2,000+ undergraduate students and 1,200+ graduate students), invites applications for the position of Associate Dean for Research. Watson College is home to nationally and internationally-recognized faculty scholars and has several affiliated research centers. These include the Integrated Electronics Engineering Center (IEEC, a New York State Center for Advanced Technology), a DoD-sponsored Innovation Institute for Flexible Hybrid Electronics Manufacturing, an NSF Industry-University Collaborative Research Center (I/UCRC) for Energy Smart Electronic System, the Center for Information Assurance and Cybersecurity (National Center of Academic Excellence in Cyber Defense Research (CAE-R)), Watson Institute for Systems Excellence (WISE), and the Center for Autonomous Solar Power (CASP). The Watson College is now poised to take a quantum leap to establish itself as a highly visible research-intensive college within a premier public university. We are seeking an Associate Dean of Research to realize this vision. The Associate Dean will be a critical member of the Dean's Office, taking a leadership role in strategic planning and execution of numerous research-related initiatives and the Associate Dean will participate in agency policy formulation relative to all aspects of Research.

Primary duties and responsibilities include:

  • Develop a vision for the Watson College to lead in research and scholarly reputation. Lead initiatives to strengthen and establish research clusters, research centers and trans-disciplinary research efforts. Assess, plan and develop a strategy for the establishment of an NSF ERC.
  • Serve as the liaison between the Watson College and funding agencies to promote faculty research, identify and address new research opportunities and ensure that faculty submit effective research proposals.
  • Facilitate faculty research and scholarship activities and promote faculty collaborations across Watson College.
  • Promote research activities of Watson College students in research related programs such as the First-Year Research Immersion (FRI) program and graduate programs.
  • Collaborate with offices within the Watson College and the University on special projects and initiatives such as:
    • Diversity Programs and Initiatives which recruits and retains faculty from underrepresented minority groups, women, persons with disabilities, and members of other protected classes.
    • Industrial Outreach and the University's Office of Entrepreneurship and Industrial Partnerships, which serve as proponents for innovation, entrepreneurship and partnerships

Requirements:

  • PhD in Engineering or Computer Science or in a closely related field.
  • Experience that demonstrates leadership and accomplishments in research and scholarship.
  • Strong evidence of leadership in interdisciplinary research collaborations.
  • Demonstrated commitment to the diversity of students, faculty and staff, and to advancing an inclusive diverse climate that stimulates excellence.
