This is a 6-month position and is renewable based on performance, departmental needs, and funding.

Job Description

This position is in the Cybersecurity Lab in support of a commercial development project with the company Castle Shield. The successful candidate will be responsible for implementing unique Quantum Key Distribution (QKD) protocols that are under development in the Cybersecurity Lab. The fiber-coupled system under development contains a Single Quantum superconducting single photon detector, the necessary equipment to cool the Single Quantum detector to 3K, pulsed lasers, polarization state generators, polarization switches, and wave division multiplexers. The successful candidate will work on developing and optimizing the Quantum Photonic system that is used to transmit and polarize single photons that are used to create symmetric encryption keys.

The successful candidate will also be responsible for researching and implementing alternative methods to enhance system performance.

These QKD protocols will be integrated with electrical hardware developed in the Cybersecurity Lab for generating unique encryptions keys and TRNGs from Physically Unclonable Functions (PUF). These protocols have been successfully implemented on a custom ThorLabs QKD emulation system. The Cybersecurity Lab has already submitted patent disclosures and published papers on this QKD system. The successful candidate will also be expected to publish the results of their work with the approval of our client.

* Development of custom two-wavelength QKD system utilizing protocols developed in the Cybersecurity Lab.

Minimum Qualifications

* PhD in Physics, Photonics, Optical Engineering, or closely related field, experience with the implementation of Quantum Photonic Systems.

Preferred Qualifications

* Knowledge and experience in: implementing QKD, quantum photonics experience, knowledge of cybersecurity and key distribution protocols, understanding of basic electronics for integrating Physically Unclonable Functions into the QKD system, knowledge of cryogenic systems.

Background Information

Northern Arizona University requires satisfactory results for the following: a criminal background investigation, an employment history verification and a degree verification (in some cases) prior to employment. Salary

Salary range begins at $54,779. Annual salary commensurate with candidate's qualifications and related experience.

FLSA Status

This position is exempt from the overtime provisions of the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA) and therefore will not earn overtime or compensatory time for additional time worked.

Benefits

Post-Doctoral Scholars are hired on a contract basis, renewable each fiscal year for a maximum of 4 renewals (5 years) according to terms of the Arizona Board of Regents' [Conditions of Post-Doctoral Service](https://apptrkr.com/get_redirect.php?id=4193684&targetURL=http://azregents.asu.edu/rrc/Policy%20Manual/6-310-Conditions%20of%20Postdoctoral%20Scholar%20Service.pdf). NAU offers an excellent benefit package to Post-Doctoral Scholars including generous health, dental and vision insurance; 10 days of vacation and 10 holidays per year; and tuition reduction for employees and qualified family members. New employees are eligible for benefits on the first day of the pay period following their enrollment, after their employment date. Employees will have 31 days from their start date to enroll in benefits. Participation in NAU retirement plans is not available to Post-Doctoral Scholars.
