The University of Houston Libraries seeks to recruit a strategic leader for the position of Associate Dean for Special Libraries and Preservation. Reporting to the Dean of Libraries, this key leadership role will position UH Libraries to expand access to unique and diverse materials that advance original scholarship and critical inquiry. The portfolio includes the Special Collections department, the Preservation and Reformatting department, the Architecture, Design, and Art Library, and the Music Library. Together, these units will work collaboratively to carry out a collecting and preservation philosophy that documents the university and the diverse communities that surround it and provide deep expertise with materiality and unique research strategies that result in scholarly and creative works.

The successful candidate will help strategically enhance our engagement with, and outreach to, the local Houston and regional community, and actively engage in fundraising activities. This individual will work closely with the Associate Deans for the Collections Strategies and Discovery units and the Research and Student Engagement units to ensure the Libraries enhances learning and research in support of student success and the university's research goals. The successful candidate will provide vision and strategic goals for building a collaborative and integrated approach to library roles and responsibilities that connect to the university's strategic plan. They also will be responsible for managing and regularly assessing policies, practices, and workflows across these units to maintain effective stewardship of our collections and application of enterprise-wide services across Libraries.

The successful candidate will be a member of the Libraries' senior administrative team, consisting of four associate deans. The associate deans will work in a team based and highly collaborative environment on idea generation, strategic planning, budgeting, and decision making to ensure employees, services, and spaces achieve the university's goals. There will be opportunities to build skills in the areas of budget formulation and planning, advancement, and space assessment and planning.

Librarians at UH hold academic rank pursuant to the University of Houston Librarians' Bylaws Document. They are expected to develop a record of service, scholarship, and professional development. UH Libraries supports the ongoing professional development of librarians and seek to recruit individuals committed to continuous learning and growth.

Salary: $145,000 to 150,000 expected hiring range, depending on qualifications. Comprehensive benefits package; choice of retirement programs including TIAA; tax-deferred annuity program available; release time to take a class up to 3 hours/week; no state or local income tax.

Description

Required:
  • Master's degree from an ALA-accredited program
  • Ability to work collaboratively with colleagues in and out of the Libraries
  • Demonstrated commitment to building a diverse and inclusive organization
  • Demonstrated success with goal setting and strategic planning for units
  • Experience with best practices in the acquisition, processing, and long-term management of manuscript, archival, and unique materials in analog and digital formats
  • Demonstrated ability to facilitate and build campus and community partnerships
  • Familiarity with collection management strategies and tools, and local and national standards specific to archival control
  • Supervisory experience

Preferred:
  • Experience with fostering inclusive and accessible spaces
  • Experience in the management and preservation of special collections or other cultural heritage enterprises
  • Experience with fundraising and grant-writing
  • Budgeting experience
  • Experience supporting employee professional development
  • Demonstrated commitment to leadership development
