Three Associate Deans for Academic Programs report to the Dean of the College of Agricultural and Life Sciences (CALS), in the Institute of Food and Agricultural Sciences (UF/IFAS). The Associate Deans provide college-wide leadership for the undergraduate and graduate academic programs in CALS. The Associate Deans work with administrators, faculty, staff, and students for continued development, improvement, and coordination of academic programs. The Associate Deans are members of the faculty in UF/IFAS.

The current position announcement is for an Associate Dean to provide college-wide and campus leadership on matters related primarily to undergraduate curriculum, admissions, enrollment management, advising, and assessment. Specific responsibilities include:
  • Facilitate development and implementation of undergraduate curricula
  • Provide administrative support to the CALS Curriculum Committee; represent CALS on the University Curriculum Committee; serve as liaison for CALS with UF Quest
  • Support academic assessment processes for undergraduate programs and provide feedback to academic units; serve as accreditation coordinator for CALS and UF/IFAS
  • Facilitate development/revision and approval of CALS policies
  • Manage data collection and reporting for SACS, UF, BOG, FAEIS, and other entities
  • Provide support for and coordination of academic advising across CALS; serve as liaison to CALS Advising Council (CAC) and CALS Undergraduate Coordinators; represent CALS on the UF Advisory Council for Undergraduate Affairs (ACUA)
  • Provide oversight of Transfer Admissions and collaborate with the director of student development and recruitment to review, revise and publish the CALS Transfer Guide
  • Collaborate with the director of student development and recruitment to facilitate Transfer and Freshman Preview and other UF admissions events
  • Provide oversight of undergraduate degree certification, student-initiated drop-add (SIDA), probation, undergraduate readmission
  • Work with internal and external offices to support students in crisis
  • Facilitate undergraduate student conflict resolution
  • Embrace the mission and core values of the College of Agricultural and Life Sciences

The Associate Deans represent CALS at a variety of student, faculty, and university functions. In addition, the CALS Associate Deans serve on university and college committees and perform general administrative and leadership functions for the college and UF/IFAS. Associate Deans are actively involved in the faculty hiring process and the promotion, tenure, and permanent status process.

Background Information:

Nearly 6,600 students (3,800 undergraduate, 2,400 graduate, 400 nondegree/certificate) are enrolled in CALS programs. CALS ranks in the top five nationally in enrollment and the number of graduate and undergraduate degrees granted. Approximately 175 faculty teaching FTEs are allocated to UF/IFAS and are distributed across nearly 400 faculty members. CALS academic programs (courses and degrees) are also offered through several of the 12 UF/IFAS Research and Education Centers.

Minimum Requirements:

Applicants must have an earned doctorate in agriculture, food, natural resources, life sciences, or a closely related discipline and be qualified for a tenured appointment at the rank of associate or full professor in one of the departments in UF/IFAS based upon an exemplary record of innovative approaches to teaching, research, and/or extension. Applicants must have significant experience and demonstrate excellence in instruction and advising and be recognized within their own field of specialization. Excellence in written and oral communication is essential. Ability to work effectively with diverse groups of administrators, faculty, and students is required.

Preferred Qualifications:

Experience in course and curriculum development is desirable.

Evidence of administrative leadership and managerial skills is desirable.

Strong support and understanding of the mission of a land-grant university is desirable.
