Assistant Director for Faculty and Community Outreach and Research

Judith Anderson Herbert Writing Center, The University of Tennessee-Knoxville

In partnership with the other members of the Judith Anderson Herbert Writing Center's (JAHWC's) team, the assistant director for faculty and community outreach and research supports three main areas within the JAHWC operation: (1) Promotes evidence-based and innovative approaches to disciplinary writing instruction by engaging in consultations with campus faculty and leading workshops about assignment design, assessing and responding to student writing, and other topics; (2) Facilitates the JAHWC's Flagship High School Application Essay Tutoring project by serving as a liaison with high schools, various campus units, and local community organizations to arrange presentations and one-to-one help for students at local Flagship high schools and selected community organizations; and (3) Develops and conducts research that impacts campus and/or community practices of writing-related teaching and learning.

In support of each of these areas, the assistant director develops print and digital resources for students and faculty; helps to mentor graduate and undergraduate students interested in disciplinary writing instruction, community outreach, writing program administration, writing-related research, etc.; and applies for grant funding as possible. Supports the overall administration of the JAHWC by maintaining records, producing reports, responding to student needs, and participating in other parts of the Center's operation as needed.

Knowledge, skills, and abilities essential for this position include: knowledge of writing center theory and practice and of the writing conventions in multiple disciplines (e.g., humanities, social sciences, natural sciences, engineering); ability to work with faculty from multiple disciplines on writing instruction and develop/deliver presentations and workshops in educational and public contexts; ability to collect, analyze, and synthesize qualitative and quantitative data; ability to collaborate with and support individuals from diverse communities and cultures; ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing with diverse groups including students, faculty, staff, and the general public; knowledge of PC and Mac computers and Excel, Word, PowerPoint, and Zoom; ability to prioritize tasks and obligations, meet deadlines, problem-solve, work independently, and participate collaboratively as part of a team.

This is a full-time, salaried, staff-exempt position with benefits, designated Administrative Professional 1. Salary range is Market range 10.

Qualifications

Required Qualifications
  • Master's degree in English, Rhetoric/Composition, Writing Studies, or related field
  • 3 years writing center experience, including experience with an undergraduate tutoring program
  • 2 years college-level classroom teaching experience

Preferred Qualifications
  • PhD in composition/rhetoric or writing studies, with coursework and/or research focus on writing centers, writing program administration, or writing in the disciplines/writing across the curriculum.
  • Experience with writing center or other writing program administration.
  • 4 years of experience with college-level writing instruction.
  • Experience with community outreach and engagement, including with high school students.
  • Prior coursework in qualitative and/or research methodologies.
  • Familiarity with the role(s) of technology in writing and pedagogy.
  • Experience with Adobe Creative Suite, WordPress, Canvas, WCOnline.
