Organizational Overview

The mission of the Scientific Data & Computing Center is to provide computational support for BNL scientific programs. Brookhaven National Laboratory (BNL) is the US extreme scientific scale Data Laboratory. The Scientific Data & Computing Center (SDCC) at BNL hosts data generated from the many scientific user facilities on the BNL site, such as the nuclear physics Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC), the brightest synchrotron in the world at NSLS II, the Center for Functional Nanomaterials, the LHC Atlas experiment at CERN (Switzerland), the Belle II experiment in Japan, t and the Atmospheric Radiation Measurement program. Due to BNL's fast-growing data science research programs, the SDCC is a lively organization developing solutions and providing the necessary computing infrastructure to support BNL's science mission.

Position Description

The SDCC has an opening for a Senior Technology Engineer / Technology Architect to take a leading role in scientific computing at the facility. Within a team that manages petabytes of storage servers, the selected candidate will contribute to supporting storage systems (deployment, monitoring, authentication, etc.) and will lead in defining the storage system evolution to support massive data processing and computing needs. This position has a high level of interaction with an international and multicultural scientific community.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Lead in the research & development of new computing and storage technologies & techniques for the LHC High-Luminosity run period
  • Operate high-performance storage systems supporting data analysis activities and I/O intensive computing workflows
  • Contribute to and evaluate machine-learning algorithms to optimize data placement and storage costs
  • Deploy and operate data-driven monitoring tools to analyze and optimize data storage interactions and computing activities
  • Contribute to improving SDCC operations (e.g., automation through machine-learning algorithms) in close cooperation with ATLAS operations teams at CERN
  • Contribute to the operations of a federated identity management (FIM) system

Position Requirements

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
  • Bachelor's degree in physics, computer science, or a related discipline
  • A minimum of 8 years of full-time relevant experience
  • Advanced principles of statistics & probability theory in analysis of large data sets
  • Prior experience with Linux system administration and configuration management
  • Prior experience deploying and operating secure, Internet-facing services
  • Prior experience with high-performance storage systems
  • Clear and concise verbal and written communication skills
  • Ability to work independently and in a collaborative environment with time-sensitive deadlines

Preferred Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
  • Experience with collaborative tools
  • Experience with data analytics and system performance monitoring tools
  • Prior experience with the deployment and operation of federated identity management (FIM) tools and services
  • Experience with software and services such as:
  • Virtualization and container software
  • Configuration management and version control software
  • Network access protocols
  • Object-oriented storage

Environmental, Health & Safety Requirements:
  • Ability and willingness to perform physically demanding work occasionally (replacing server components, moving servers within the data center, connecting network cabling among servers, inventory and organizing replacement hardware parts, etc.)

OTHER INFORMATION:
  • Occasional travel (foreign and domestic) is required
  • This position is based at CERN
  • Appointment level will be commensurate with qualifications and experience
