The Equity Center at the University of Virginia within the Karsh Institute of Democracy seeks a motivated Equity Data Scientist with an emphasis in Educational Research.
Organization Overview
The Equity Center at the University of Virginia is a collaborative multi-disciplinary center, established in August 2019. Its mission is to tangibly redress racial and socioeconomic inequality in university communities by advancing a transformative approach to universities' fundamental research mission, which will in turn reform institutional values, pedagogy and operations. Specifically, the Equity Center will change the way that University of Virginia (UVA) scholars interact with members of the surrounding community, replacing a model that has been extractive with one that is respectful and collaborative and conducts research that benefits communities. This approach will be a model for institutions of higher education domestically and globally to leverage their anchor positions in local communities to eradicate racial and socioeconomic inequity.
Position Overview
The Equity Data Scientist position's primary role is to perform statistical analysis and evaluation, and support research for the Equity Center's youth Starr Hill Pathways program and other Democratization of Data initiatives. The position requires a detail-oriented analyst with the capacity for data collection, visualizations, cleaning, and analysis.

This is primarily a sedentary job involving extensive use of desktop computers. The job does occasionally require traveling some distance to attend meetings, and programs.

This position is Hybrid located in Charlottesville, VA. The anticipated start date is July 2023.

Anticipated Hiring Range: $70,000-$80,000 commensurate with education and experience.

Job responsibilities:
- Work collaboratively with the Starr Hill Pathways programming team and UVA faculty to drive the research mission.
- The position will require the ability to contribute to research design, data collection and organization, statistical analysis and modeling, and program evaluation.
- Prepare reports for internal evaluation, for external funders, and for dissemination in white papers, issue briefs, electronic platforms, academic journals, and conference presentations.
- Contribute to community-engaged and data-oriented research projects centered on regional equity, including data visualization and platform development.
- Communicate the research to a wide range of audiences, including community partners and relevant stakeholders.
- Work collaboratively with members of the Equity Center team, Democratization of Data team, the UVA Karsh Institute team, the President's Council on Community Partnership as well as partners throughout the community focused on achieving equitable outcomes.
- In addition to the above job responsibilities, other duties may be assigned.
Required Qualifications:
- Education: Master's or terminal degree
- Experience: Five years of specialized experience.
- Knowledge of the literature and research in adolescent development, educational access, and similar domains.
- Strong foundation in statistical modeling and familiarity with approaches to causal inference and/or longitudinal data.
- Must have a commitment to serve communities by reducing racial and socioeconomic inequity.
- Excellent organizational skills, time management, and transparent, high integrity leadership skills.
- Ability to work with tact on complex, sensitive and confidential issues.
- Experience using analysis and data to make recommendations to relevant stakeholders.
- Experience with statistical software.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Relevant experience serving youth from historically marginalized communities.
- Understanding of research with youth, vulnerable populations, and/or participatory research.
- Preference will be given to candidates' knowledge and experience with Charlottesville and Albemarle County organizations working to redress racial and socio-economic inequalities in education and youth.
