SUMMARY:

This position provides support for teaching and research laboratories in chemistry, with focus on support of such labs in the C-3xx and D-3xx floors of Gottwald. These floors include teaching labs in organic, organic/analytical, and biochemistry. This position is crucial to the daily operation of the chemistry department since all of our teaching labs are to be comprehensively prepped by the lab manager each day prior to the start of a teaching lab. The lab manager is to work with the appropriate lab director and faculty in prepping for the organic labs and with appropriate faculty in prepping for organic/analytical, and biochemistry labs. The lab manager is responsible for insuring that all necessary chemicals, glassware, solvents, gases, cryogens and laboratory supplies are in place for the teaching labs and that appropriate supplies for research are ordered and received in a timely manner. The lab manager also works with the Director of Instrument Facilities to ensure that all teaching instruments are in proper condition for use by the students and faculty, and in particular, the person in this position is to support the maintenance and operation of the departmental NMR instruments, and other instrumentation as directed.

RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Prepares assigned teaching labs for daily operation and keeps appropriate records.
  • Orders chemicals, glassware, solvents, gases, cryogens and laboratory supplies as needed for both teaching and research labs.
  • Prepares stock solutions and provides all chemicals and glassware necessary for student experiments.
  • Sets up equipment and apparatus prior to student experiments; disassembles, cleans and stores all equipment following completion of experiments.
  • Maintains inventory and inventory control for organic, organic/analytical, and biochemistry teaching labs (chemicals, glassware and basic instrumentation) and associated databases.
  • Handles chemical waste disposal, chemical hygiene issues, and chemical safety
  • Works with faculty and administrative assistant on all purchasing issues related to organic, organic/analytical, and biochemistry teaching laboratories.
  • Maintains the liquid nitrogen supply in the NMR facilities and assists in maintaining the liquid helium supply.
  • Assist the Director of Instrumentation with minor lab equipment repairs as needed
  • Sends chemical samples for analysis off-campus. Obtains and maintains the necessary certification to do so legally.
  • Performs standard tests of teaching instruments prior to student use, including, as appropriate, analyzing standard sample with the teaching instruments to make sure they are ready for student and faculty use.

QUALIFICATIONS:
  • A strong background in chemistry and chemistry related issues (safety, instrumentation set up, solution preparation, chemical storage, lab organization, etc.)
  • Technical competency in chemistry
  • Problem solving skills
  • Organizational skills
  • Appropriate document tracking skills
  • Appropriate computer skills relating to ordering materials from vendor and appropriate follow up

EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE:
  • Bachelor's degree in chemistry or related area is required.
  • Depending on nature of the person's formal education, 0-5 years experience.

WORK HOURS:
  • Full-time, exempt position
  • Monday - Friday, 8:30 a.m. - 5:00 p.m.; 7.75 hrs./day; 38.75 hrs./week

SALARY STRUCTURE:

Pay Grade 6 (Hiring Range $46,114.00 to $61,110.00 per hour)
