About the Program:
WRI has central staff dedicated to creating a strong learning culture and ensuring research excellence and the protection of human subjects across programs and international offices. The Research, Data, and Innovation team (RDI) oversees a rigorous quality assurance process for all knowledge products bearing the WRI logo and supports over 900 staff across the Institute in their research projects. WRI research publications go through a rigorous, centralized peer review process to help ensure quality, accuracy, institutional coherence, and a lack of bias. We measure our success in both the quality of our research and in its ability to drive change in the world in ways that support our three human systems (Food-land-water; Energy; Cities). Our group works closely with other core functions (Communications, Development, HR, Managing for Results).

Job Highlight:
You will help foster a culture of research excellence and ensure high quality research across WRI that contributes to WRI's mission and goals. You will oversee the review process for products assigned to you and be willing to stand up for quality under pressure. You will derive satisfaction from helping others succeed. You will be supported by the rest of the Research, Data and Innovation team, including operations and publications specialists and colleagues based in all of WRI's offices. You will report to the Director, Research, Data and Innovation.

What will you do:Ensure that WRI branded knowledge products meet WRI's quality standards and are designed to deliver actionable results (50% of time):
  • Oversee the peer review process for WRI-branded publications and data products, as part of the Global RDI team, and determine if they meet WRI research standards
  • Provide constructive feedback to authors on how to present their research so it is credible and communicates effectively to their target audience, which may include policymakers, businesses, civil society organizations, multilateral development organizations, peers and partners
Provide mentoring and support to staff in WRI's programs and centers to strengthen WRI's capacity to conduct high quality actionable research (30% of time):
  • Provide support to program staff on how to produce high-quality work, including research design, data interpretation, analytical issues, and effective writing
  • Work with programs to systematically integrate research, learning and evidence-generation into program planning and implementation
  • Review large grant proposals and provide suggestions on how to strengthen their research component
Other (20%):
  • With the rest of RDI, you will foster a culture of excellence in research, including in the design and operation of efficient and effective review processes
What will you need:
  • Education: MS. (Ph.D. preferred) in a social or natural sciences discipline relevant to environment or development or in related fields
  • Experience: 12+ years of relevant experience in conducting policy-relevant research related to environment and/or development and at least 2+ years overseeing junior researchers
  • Demonstrated knowledge of a range of research methods, quantitative or qualitative
  • Experience publishing in peer-reviewed venues, including high-quality international journals, and reviewing for international journals or other outlets
  • Demonstrated ability to mentor, guide, and support research teams with diverse backgrounds, and give constructive feedback
  • Languages: Fluent in oral and written English. Knowledge of Portuguese, French, Spanish, Bahasa, Chinese or Turkish is a plus
Potential Salary: Salary range is between 116,000 USD and 139,000 USD. Salary is commensurate with experience and other compensable factors.
