Associate Scientist, Process Development:

API Crystallization and Engineering / Material Science

Specific Responsibilities:

Work in collaboration with project team members including process chemists, analytical chemist, and formulation scientists to screen, characterize, identify, and select API/intermediate form candidates. Perform salt/cocrystal screens to identify potential new forms of the API. Conduct scientific research to design, develop, and scale up crystallization/isolation processes to deliver selected forms with desired purity, stability profiles and particle characteristics.

Knowledge, Experience and Skills:
  • Preferred degree in Chemical Engineering, Chemistry or related scientific discipline
  • Fundamental understanding of solid-state chemistry, thermodynamics and kinetics of polymorphism and crystallization
  • Various isolation process development, modeling, and scale-up including crystallization, filtration, drying, wet/dry milling
  • Experience with salt screening to improve chiral resolution of target molecules
  • Familiarity with solid form characterization techniques such as XRPD, DSC, TGA, DVS, NMR, SEM, and PSD
  • Excellent communication (both verbal and technical) and interpersonal skills
  • Works on a wide range of problems where analysis of situations or data requires evaluation of intangible variables, requiring regular use of ingenuity and creativity
  • Demonstrates technical proficiency, scientific creativity, collaboration with others and independent thought in suggesting experimental design and research strategy
  • Must think critically and creatively and be able to work independently, determine appropriate resources for resolution of problems and have strong organizational and planning skills


Minimum Qualifications:
  • Master's degree and 3 + years of relevant experience; or Bachelor's degree and 5+ years of relevant experience.

The salary range for this position is: $120,445.00 - $155,870.00. Gilead considers a variety of factors when determining base compensation, including experience, qualifications, and geographic location. These considerations mean actual compensation will vary. This position may also be eligible for a discretionary annual bonus, discretionary stock-based long-term incentives (eligibility may vary based on role), paid time off, and a benefits package. Benefits include company-sponsored medical, dental, vision, and life insurance plans*.
