Position Description
Reporting to the Associate Director of Sponsored Research, the Sponsored Research Manager will be responsible for the following main functions: 1) manage a high-level complex research portfolio; 2) manage one or two members of the Sponsored Research Administration Team; 3) with the guidance of the Associate Director, establish, write up and document standard operating procedures required specifically in the widely expanding sponsored research compliance realm; 4) under the guidance of, and in partnership with, the Associate Director, devise standard methodologies on monitoring and tracking compliance proactively; 5) establish methods for measuring and reporting sponsored metrics and drivers of the department; 6) serve as a deputy or back-up in the case of an absence of the Associate Director, and serve as an additional team resource to discuss issues and problem-solve.

More specifically, the Sponsored Research Manager will:
  • Manage a complex portfolio of lab sponsored research, such as those including subawards, many federal and year-logic accounts with dual appointment PIs as well as those of newly recruited faculty members to grow their sponsored portfolio;
  • Manage compliance issues, including, for example, use of stem cells or fetal tissue, human subjects, faculty disclosures, international collaborations;
  • Manage SRA team member(s), including annual reviews, interviewing and hiring (as needed), establishing expectations and setting standards for high-level performance;
  • Work with the Associate Director for Sponsored Research on establishing, writing up and documenting standard procedures such as, but not limited to journals, cost transfer approvals, effort monitoring, faculty review reports, faculty disclosures, new federal requirements;
  • Work with the Associate Director for Sponsored Research on the development and implementation of standard monitoring and tracking for processes such as cost transfers, journal execution and recording, effort  reporting, as well as other sponsored research areas;
  • Strategize in establishing new, innovative and efficient ways of measuring department's sponsored research health, including overall expenditures, committed sponsored revenue, number of proposals submitted, collaborations;
  • Serve as a back-up team lead and trouble-shoot complex sponsored issues in conjunction with the Associate Director and other members of the Sponsored Research team
Basic Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent work experience required
  • Minimum of 5 years' relevant work experience
  • Advanced knowledge of sponsored research regulations
Additional Qualifications and Skills
Knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite, advanced Excel skills. Working knowledge of basic financial principles, budgeting, financial analysis.
Effective communication; ability to interact diplomatically with multiple stakeholders; adaptability; ability to manage staff through motivation, positive interactions, clear communication and setting clear expectations; ability to understand multiple complex concepts related to other functional areas that influence sponsored research (such as human resources, finance, contract law, the regulatory environment, government relations, education); ability to treat sensitive data with confidentiality and care; ability to think creatively and problem-solve; ability to elicit cooperation from multiple offices and institutions and build bridges.
