Water Resources Research Center, University of Hawai'i at Manoa, invites applications for a full-time, 11-month, tenure track, faculty appointment of an Environmental Chemist as an open rank Specialist, position number 84826. This appointment is expected to begin on May 1, 2023 or as soon as possible, subject to position clearance and availability of funds.
The WRRC () is an Organized Research Unit of the University of Hawai'i whose mission is to promote understanding of critical state and regional water resource management and policy issues through research, community outreach, and public education. The center has eight tenured or tenure-track faculty, 24 affiliate research faculty, four permanent staff members, and nine extramurally-supported researchers. WRRC supports water-research across the campus and serves as the coordinating entity for water research and community engagement by faculty, staff, and students from all relevant disciplines. The WRRC Analytical Chemistry Lab, supported with a full time staff, is undergoing significant upgrades to provide advanced, state of the art teaching and research , including an Orbitrap LC/MS, a triple quadrupole GC/MS and more.
WRRC is seeking an individual with the capacity to conduct research and outreach and take a leading role in addressing Hawai'i's most important water quality issues stemming from emerging, current, and legacy chemical contaminants. This includes but is not limited to detection, characterization, treatment and remediation of persistent organic pollutants (such as pesticides/fumigants and PFAS), petroleum contaminants, and others. The person hired for this position will also contribute to the educational mission of the university by supporting and advising graduate and undergraduate students, contributing guest lectures when called upon, and teaching courses as the instructor on record on a regular basis, just as a Professor would who is employed in an academic unit.

Duties and Responsibilities:
The faculty member will be expected to:
1) develop a robust nationally recognized research program in the field of Environmental Chemistry;
2) seek extramural funding and publish research in peer-reviewed journals;
3) establish and maintain connections to relevant academic units; teach courses; mentor and provide support for graduate and undergraduate students and postdocs;
4) provide service to the Water Resources Research Center (WRRC), the University, the profession, and the community;
5) conduct extension and outreach activities through WRRC that support water security and resilience in Hawai'i and the US Affiliated Pacific Islands; and
6) perform other scholarly duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications:

1. Ph.D. in environmental engineering, environmental science, chemistry, or a closely related field from an accredited college or university of recognized standing or foreign equivalent. ABDs will be considered as long as all degree requirements are met before the start date. ABDs must also submit a letter from their committee chair attesting that dissertation and all degree requirements will be completed prior to the date of hire.
2. Demonstrated expertise and scholarly achievement in the field of environmental engineering, environmental chemistry and/or analytical chemistry as applied to water resources.
3. Demonstrated excellence in professional and written and oral communications.
4. Demonstrated experience mentoring students.
5. Interest in supporting Indigenous approaches, values, and ways of knowing with respect and cultural sensitivity.

Desirable Qualifications:

1. Research skills and interests that will complement and enhance the research activities in the Water Resources Research Center and that can benefit State and Federal agencies in Hawaii and the Pacific Region.
2. Experience in laboratory experimental design, field sampling design, and data collection and analyses.
3. Record of or plan for procuring extramural research funding.
4. Knowledge of and interest in current advances and key trends in analytical chemistry
5. Ability to work productively with colleagues, community organizations, and stakeholders in cooperative, cross-cultural, interdisciplinary endeavors.
6. Demonstrated experience working with federal or state governmental agencies.

Salary: Commensurate with qualifications and experience.
