Position Summary
The Opportunity:
Skagit Valley College is accepting applications for associate faculty to teach Geographic Information System (GIS) courses in the Environmental Conservation program. The Environmental Conservation program prepares students that are degree-seeking in an Associate's degree (AAS-T) and Bachelor of Applied Science in Environmental Conservation as well as GIS certificate-seeking students.
BAS degrees as well as associates and certificates at Skagit Valley College operate on a cohort model and follow a spiral instructional design. The spiral design means that the curriculum is integrated within each quarter and between quarters. The GIS courses are offered in a supported online environment.
Part-time faculty positions are typically filled on a quarterly basis. Part-time faculty are responsible for preparing and providing instruction to students as required by program design.

The salary rate for part-time faculty is in accordance with the negotiated agreement and may be subject to change based on legislative mandates. In order to be eligible for benefits, state regulations must be met.
Rate of Pay: Faculty compensation units (FCU) is computed by total hours (lecture, lab, clinical) identified on the approved course outline for a given course, divided by eleven. Part-time faculty pay is computed by multiplying the faculty compensation unit rate by the number of faculty compensation units. The current FCU rate for 2023-24 at Step A is $877.00 (will be increased to include any I-732 COLA).

Duties and Responsibilities
- Provide contextualized instruction in GIS that meet defined learning outcomes, following SVC program design principles;
- Create a positive learning environment for students using diverse teaching methods to support and enhance student success;
- Deliver culturally appropriate curriculum that reflects the diversity of student experience;
- Express appropriate awareness of the history of underrepresented groups and promote an equitable work and learning environment;
- Develop and provide class syllabi to students and the academic office;
- Assess, monitor, and document student performance;
- Work collaboratively with other program faculty teaching courses that quarter;
- Recommend modifications and improvements to course and program design;
- Fulfill part-time faculty responsibilities in accordance with the negotiated agreement and Skagit Valley College policies.
Knowledge and/or understanding of:
- Familiarity with active learning strategies inclusive of all cultures and backgrounds.
- Familiar with ArcGIS cloud platform.
- Familiarity with learning management systems such as Canvas (or demonstrated ability to learn) and with MS Office.
- Communicate effectively in oral and written English.
- Strong leadership skills that include the ability to make sound decisions and delegate appropriately.
- Engage in team teaching, applied learning, and in a flipped classroom.
- Foster a constructive learning environment.
- Contribute to the College's diversity initiative and foster a climate of multicultural understanding and appreciation.

Minimum Qualifications:
- Master's Degree in geography/GIS, or a related ecological field, such as environmental science, ecology, or natural resource management.
- College-level teaching experience;
- Experience working with students from diverse backgrounds;
- Demonstrated commitment to promoting equitable access and educational achievement of diverse students;
- Demonstrated commitment to collaborative teaching and learning.

- Course: BISC 220 | 33 lecture, 44 lab
- 33 + 44 = 77
- 77/11= 7 FCUs
- A Step A faculty member would be paid 7 x FCU rate $877 = $6,139
- Prior to employment, the candidate must pass a criminal background check;

- Completion of academic degree(s) will be verified through receipt of official transcripts at the time of hire.
