Basic purpose and responsibilities: To insure the safe and accurate operation of the Biomaterials Laboratory; this includes the operation of a state-of-the art scanning electron microscope, Instron Universal Testing machine and other lab equipment as well as the supervision and training of technicians, postdocs and students in the proper use of equipment and safety of the lab.
Regular job duties:
+ Oversee and direct personnel in the safe operation of lab equipment.
+ Process order quotation, receiving, inventory, and distribution to students.
+ Act as a lab safety coordinator with EHS to ensure safety,
+ Help operate and maintain scanning electron microscope.
+ Operate Instron universal testing machine, section and polishing machine.
+ Prepare samples for experiments, e.g. scanning and mechanical testing.
+ Compute, tabulate, record, and reproduce lab data and notes.
+ Design and fabricate jigs and fixtures for specimen testing.
+ Maintain laboratory equipment, apparatus, documents, and facility.
+ Research vendors and advise on purchase of equipment, chemicals, and supplies.
+ Prepare Power Point slides for departmental faculty and students.
+ Photomicrography and macrophotography.
+ Filling in for department administrator during sick or vacation leave.
+ Proctoring exams for Biomaterials and other departments as needed.
+ Maintain inventory of supplies, chemicals, etc.
+ Perform daily, weekly, monthly and annual laboratory upkeep and records keeping.
Required Skills
BA/BS in Physics, Chemistry, Materials Science or equivalent. Familiarity and competence with SEM, optical microscope, universal testing machine, 3D printer, metallographic specimen preparation, weighing technique, measuring instruments, wet chemistry operation, hand and power tools including drill press and lathe. Able to lift objects of 25 lbs.
