Director/Principal Scientist I, Process Development (Chemical Engineering)

Responsibilities & Skills:
  • Support chemical process engineering development and evaluation on lab scale, as well as implementation on large scale, to ensure process robustness, safety, and performance.
  • Must have a thorough understanding on API production in a GMP environment, GMP compliance, process implementation and operation excellence.
  • Perform engineering evaluation of critical chemical process unit operations and provide assessment on practicality, efficiency, and reproducibility on large scale manufacturing.
  • Work in a team setting to support the development of economical, state-of-the-art techniques to isolate, characterize, purify and mass-produce substances.
  • Must have strong hands-on skills and experience to plan, design, implement and analyze experimentation to convert laboratory understanding to process knowledge of drug substances or drug products.
  • Advise members of teams in the initiation and execution of laboratory experimentation, considering economic, regulatory and safety factors.
  • Work on a wide range of engineering problems centered around chemical process development, where analysis of situations or data requires regular use of ingenuity and creativity.
  • Make contributions to scientific literature and conferences through publication and presentation of research results.
  • Serve as internal consultant or advisor to the chemistry team as well as to senior management on functional area development direction.
  • Maintains in-depth knowledge of engineering principles and theories, applying such knowledge to the direction that supports Company interests.
  • Demonstrate technical proficiency, scientific creativity, collaboration with others and independent thought in suggesting experimental design and research strategy.
  • Must think critically and creatively and be able to work independently, determine appropriate resources for resolution of problems and have strong organizational and planning skills.
  • Demonstrate excellent scientific communication skills (both verbal and technical) and interpersonal skills.
  • Demonstrate collaborative communication and problem-solving spirit.

Specific Education & Experience Requirements:
  • Ph.D. in Chemical Engineering or Chemistry with 12+ years of pharmaceutical industry experience
  • BS or MS degree in Chemical Engineering or Chemistry with 15+ years of pharmaceutical industry experience

The salary range for this position is: $199,835.00 - $258,610.00. Gilead considers a variety of factors when determining base compensation, including experience, qualifications, and geographic location. These considerations mean actual compensation will vary. This position may also be eligible for a discretionary annual bonus, discretionary stock-based long-term incentives (eligibility may vary based on role), paid time off, and a benefits package.
