Performs the school nurse functions of administering health care service to students throughout Spotsylvania County Public Schools. Administers the required health screening for students. Provides health leadership in establishing a complete and effective health program for the school. Administers medications following procedural guidelines.

Essential Job Functions:

• Compiles and maintains the cumulative health record for each student in the building to assure accurate and complete health records are available
• Provides emergency or immediate first aid, initiates the incident/accident report, and follows-up on all personnel injured on school property
• Provides assistance in maintaining the school's emergency card file
• Assists with the development of emergency procedures to provide care that minimizes the effects of accidents and illnesses in the school
• Assists students, parents, and teachers adapt to chronic health problems of students
• Acts as the school resource person for health information and instruction.
• Maintains a daily record of students seen in the clinic
• Completes reports as required by school procedures and state regulations
• Reports to different location to perform duties depending on need and staffing

Knowledge/Skill/Abilities:

• Health procedures and practices
• School clinic operations
• School board policies with regard to student health matters
• Medication side effects
• State laws regarding immunizations and contagious diseases
• Assess student medical needs
• Enact procedures for medical needs, especially for special needs students;
• Enforce state immunization laws
• Exclude students with contagious diseases
• Provide OSHA in-service for faculty
• Communicate with Spotsylvania County Health Department to coordinate these clinics
• Provide regular health and services to students
• Provide emergency care for students and staff
• Discern when outside medical assistance in necessary

Education Required: (degree required - high school through graduate degree)
Valid license to practice as a registered nurse. Bachelor's degree in nursing is preferred

Note: Work experience, vocational training, on the job training, may be substituted in place of experience and education qualifications as the district finds appropriate and acceptable.
