Substitute School Nurse
The substitute school nurse is called on an as-needed basis to provide Health Office coverage throughout the school year. The substitute school nurse is responsible for implementing the nursing components of the school health program, assisting with student wellbeing and completing health related tasks; does related work as required.
QUALIFICATIONS:
REPORTS TO:
GOALS: To function as a member of the health-care team by exercising sound nursing judgment based on preparation, knowledge, skills, understandings and past experiences in nursing situations. The registered nurse can execute medical regimens as prescribed by a licensed physician or dentist. The registered nurse participates in the planning , implementation and evaluation of nursing care in settings where nursing takes place.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
Physical Demands
Often Standing and moving around the room.
Moderate lifting from 15 to 30 pounds.
Some carrying - up to 30 pounds.
Manual dexterity to use office equipment.
Repetitive movement of fingers and hands for keyboarding.
Sensory Abilities
Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations.
Ability to write reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals.
Temperament
Ability to work as a member of a team. Must be courteous and able to effectively communicate with people.
Must be cooperative, congenial and service-oriented, and promote these qualities in the department.
Ability to work in an environment with frequent interruptions.
Cognitive Ability
Ability to follow written and verbal directions.
Ability to present information and respond to questions from staff or students.
Ability to complete assigned tasks with minimal supervision.
Ability to calculate figures and amounts such as discounts, interest, commisions, proportions, percentages, area, circumference, and volume.
Ability to apply concepts of basic algebra and geometry.
Ability to use correct grammar, sentence structure and spelling.
Ability to operate computer and technology equipment.
Ability to use computer technology efficiently.
License
License from the State to practice as an RN or LPN.

- Administers First Aid.
- Caring for ill students; notifies parents as needed.
- Logs health room visits.
- Updating confidential health & other lists.
- Medication administration and treatment procedures as defined by the certified school nurse.
- Parent contact as needed.
- Head Lice checks.
- Prepare nurse's office supply budget needs.
- Query & print daily health room logs.
- Collects and maintains emergency cards.
- Types and gets all new incoming Kindergarten & other student health records ready.
- Completes paperwork applicable to the position.
- Other duties as assigned by principal and certified school nurse.
