The University of California, Irvine, Department of Drama, invites applications for a Scenic/Media Design professor. Appointment is from Assistant Professor I to Assistant Professor III on the UC ladder rank scale, commensurate with experience. Join a dynamic design team training graduate design students in a three-year professional MFA degree and undergraduate students in a liberal arts BA.
Candidates for this position must have outstanding professional credits in theatrical media/scenic design, and a strong commitment to teaching, training, and working in a university environment. Expertise in projection design software, Vectorworks, and CGI software is important, as is experience in virtual stages, virtual production, VR, XR, and other emergent media. In addition to more traditional scenic design, we seek candidates who are equally versed in theatrical media design/projection design along with current industry standard creation and delivery platforms. The position entails recruiting and mentoring graduate students and collaborating with other design specialties and the directing and acting programs. Teaching responsibilities include graduate courses in scenic and media design and undergraduate course in those design areas. Additional responsibilities include curriculum development, departmental and university service, and maintaining and growing a professional career.
Candidates must demonstrate a pedagogical and professional profile that is compatible with distinguished training at a major research university. A BA degree is required. An MFA degree or commensurate professional experience is required by the time of hire.
The Department is particularly interested in candidates whose research intersects with contemporary art theory, such as African American or African diaspora studies, Latinx studies, Asian American or Asian diaspora studies, Native American studies, feminism and gender studies, postcolonial critique and decolonization, queer theory or performance theory.
