The Department of Student Life is seeking an Interim Deputy to the Associate VP for Student Engagement and Dean of Students (AVPDOS) who will report directly to the Associate Vice Provost and serves as a key member of the AVPDOS' leadership team. This position will help lead the organization, implementation, and oversight of key strategic initiatives and projects, and serve as a liaison for the AVPDOS to various stakeholders across the institution. This position will work closely with all relevant institutional departments and university-wide constituents, including faculty, staff, students, alumni, families, and friends. The Deputy to the AVPDOS serves as the initial point of contact for the Dean's office in her absence and coordinates with the appropriate members of the Vice Provost's Cabinet, Student Affairs Directors, and others to respond to critical and time-sensitive issues. This senior staff role requires strong organizational and collaboration skills, strategic planning abilities, high emotional intelligence, and ability to navigate political environments. The incumbent must have a background in higher education.

The Associate Vice Provost for Student Engagement and Dean of Students is responsible for many student services that complement the academic infrastructure including student activities, campus programming and traditions, student centers, new student orientation, events and scheduling, civic and democratic engagement, and response to student crises.

Specific Duties & Responsibilities
  • Support the AVPDOS in leading the operations of their portfolio, working in close consultation with the departmental directors.
  • Assist with managing key initiatives and special projects as assigned by the AVPDOS.
  • Lead and/or co-lead key initiatives and special projects.
  • Provide direct support to the AVPDOS, their senior leadership team, and other departmental leaders to develop, implement, and support programs that promote the functions of the Office of the AVPDOS.
  • Assist with managing requests and issues that come to the AVPDOS with a high level of confidentiality, discretion, and professionalism.
  • Provide direct support to the AVPDOS in the management and timely resolution of significant matters including but not limited to the deceased student response protocol, outreach to students impacted by natural disasters, student demonstrations, etc.
  • Assists with the assessment and evaluation of programs and services; information gathering and analysis; drafting correspondence; report writing, and data visualization.
  • On an as-needed basis, provide leadership to departments in the AVPDOS portfolio during times of growth and transition.
  • Represent the AVPDOS in engaging with students, families, administration, faculty, staff, and the public as requested by the AVPDOS.
  • Represent the AVPDOS on internal and external committees as requested by the AVPDOS.
  • Serve as the initial point of contact for the Dean's office in their absence to coordinate with the appropriate members of the Vice Provost's Cabinet and others to respond to critical and time-sensitive issues.
  • Interface regularly with the Chief of Staff to the Vice Provost of Student Affairs around communication requests and other requests.
  • Establish and maintain strong relationships with stakeholders and campus partners.
  • Stay abreast of national trends relative to student engagement and student affairs.
  • Review content published by Hopkins student publications on a weekly basis and keep the AVPDOS and Chief of Staff abreast of any content that may be of interest to the VPSA and other University leadership.
  • Participate in the selection process for senior-level management positions and make recommendations to the Dean regarding the selection of individuals to fill such positions.
  • Develop briefings, reports, and web content for the AVPDOS.
  • May require evening and weekend hours.

Minimum Qualifications
  • Master's Degree required in student affairs, student development, counseling or a related area.
  • Minimum 5 years progressively responsible related experience in a higher education setting.
  • Additional education may substitute for required experience and additional experience may substitute for required education as permitted by the JHU equivalency formula.


Preferred Qualifications
  • Eight (8) or more years in higher education is preferred.

JHU Equivalency Formula: 30 undergraduate degree credits (semester hours) or 18 graduate degree credits may substitute for one year of experience.
