Overview:
This position has been budgeted for $23.64 per hour and is non-negotiable.

We invite applications for a Research Assistant position in the Experimental Mechanics Laboratory at San Diego State University. This role offers a unique opportunity for a dedicated individual to contribute to cutting-edge research in materials science, focusing on multiscale mechanical and thermal characterization of polymers and composites using advanced experimental techniques.

Under direct supervision incumbents perform simple duties which are routine and repetitive. Detailed instructions/procedures/policies and research protocols are followed and are well-defined. Ability to learn and apply basic/elementary research methods and procedures; ability to follow written and verbal directions; to read and write at a level appropriate to the duties of the position; work cooperatively with others; ability to perform basic mathematical calculations and follow basic research protocols.

Responsibilities:
Advanced Experimental Setup and Optimization 20%

Lead the design, setup, and optimization of experimental apparatus for mechanical testing of polymers and composite materials.

Implement advanced testing protocols using state-of-the-art equipment to ensure precision and reliability in experimental outcomes.

Innovate in sample preparation techniques, including advanced methodologies (e.g., CNC-based machining, and 3D printing) tailored to specific research objectives.

Comprehensive Data Acquisition and Analysis 20%

Conduct rigorous experiments to investigate fundamental mechanical and thermal properties such as strength, fatigue behavior, fracture toughness, dynamic mechanical analysis, and thermal analysis of polymer and composite specimens.

Utilize sophisticated spectroscopic techniques to capture high-resolution data under varying environmental conditions and loading regimes.

Apply advanced data analysis tools (e.g., finite element analysis, statistical methods) to interpret experimental results and contribute to scholarly publications and technical reports.

Integration of Novel Research Approaches 20%

Collaborate closely with faculty and research partners to develop and implement novel research methodologies and experimental techniques in polymer and composite mechanics.

Stay abreast of emerging trends and technological advancements in materials science, integrating innovative approaches to advance understanding in the field.

Documentation and Dissemination of Research Findings 20%

Conduct comprehensive literature reviews to inform experimental design and methodology development, ensuring alignment with current scientific knowledge and research trends.

Maintain meticulous records of experimental procedures, observations, and data analysis to support transparency and reproducibility.

Prepare scholarly manuscripts and presentations for dissemination in peer-reviewed journals and academic conferences, showcasing the laboratory's contributions to materials science.

Laboratory Management and Safety Compliance 15%

Adhere to rigorous laboratory safety protocols and guidelines, overseeing safe handling, storage, and disposal of hazardous materials and chemicals.

Maintain an organized and efficient laboratory environment conducive to rigorous scientific inquiry and collaborative research efforts.

Other Duties as Assigned 5%

Qualifications:

Preferred Qualifications

Degree in Mechanical Engineering or a related discipline.

Additional Applicant Information

Candidate must reside in California or live in a commutable distance from SDSU at time of hire.
