Labcorp is implementing an exciting new "big data" approach to cancer testing. We are integrating the test results from our national oncology testing business into an enterprise data warehouse to enable a variety of data mining applications. We have an excellent opportunity for a highly motivated data/curation scientist within our new Oncology Data Improvement group. You will be part of a collaborative, cross-functional team bringing together software engineers, clinicians, and data scientists, and informaticists to extract clinical insights from oncology data. Oncology testing data is complex and heterogeneous; we need people who can bring both biomedical understanding and data management skills to the task of making this data usable.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Collaboratively design JSON, delimited data structures and relational formats to capture the complexities of oncology data supporting multiple stakeholders
  • Ingest oncology test results and supporting patient and metadata and produce harmonize, standardized output supporting product and data deliverables
  • Create mappings between LIMS clinical test results and EDW data structures to allow tests to be incorporated and maintained in the warehouse
  • Normalize and represent test results using clinical data standards such as ICD-O-3, FHIR, mCode, LOINC, ICD-10, UMLS, SnoMED, RxNorm, etc
  • Expand and adapt biomedical ontologies as needed to capture expanding knowledge
  • Apply natural language processing (NLP) tools to the extraction of information from structured and unstructured test results
  • Curate, analyze, manage, and harmonize large datasets and ensure supporting code and data quality processes are in place
  • Produce analyses of testing data to convey patterns and trends for technical and non-technical audiences
  • Work closely with engineering teams in the full development cycle from product inception, research and prototyping to release in production

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

Demonstrated competency in all the following areas is desired, but not required. The ability to think logically, be self-directed, learn technical and subject matter related materials quickly, and communicate effectively are all highly desired.

Understanding of oncology and cancer biology
  • Exposure to LIMS and/or EMR data representing the oncology patient journey
  • Familiarity with clinical data standards such as HL7 and FHIR
  • Familiarity with HIPAA, GDPR, and other data privacy regulations
  • Experience working with NGS datasets and databases or other clinical testing data sources
  • Experience curating and extracting data from databases, analyzing data, integrating terminologies for biomedical ontology development
  • Experience working with relational databases, Databricks, Jupyter notebooks, and/or HANA
  • Proficiency in Python
  • Proficiency with SQL queries and database navigation/management
  • Familiarity with JIRA, Confluence and version control (git)
  • Experience integrating public and proprietary information sources into a knowledge architecture at scale - e.g. pharmaceutical, chemical, or biological informatics
  • Experience with scientific Natural Language Processing / Text Mining technologies
  • Ability to interact and work well with members of other functional groups in project teams and a strong sense of project ownership

Requirements:
  • Requires a B.S. Degree in STEM field w/5+ years of experience or a M.S. Degree in STEM field w/3+ years of experience or a Ph.D. in STEM field w/up to 2 years of experience
  • Demonstrated competence in informatics, information integration, data extraction, transformation, & loading (ETL), and/or knowledge modeling
  • Must be able to provide evidence of relevant expertise in the form of presentations, software, technical publications, and/or knowledge of applications
