Job Description

Performs and/or coordinates a wide range of laboratory research procedures and conducts a spectrum of complex support tasks and projects determined by the field and scope of the particular research study. Performs a variety of laboratory techniques independently and presents results.

Job Overview

The Yu Lab in the Department of Computational Biology is seeking outstanding candidates for a Staff Scientist position focused on single-cell and spatial omics technologies and applications. The Yu Lab is focused on developing and applying computational and systems biology approaches to dissect the molecular circuits that drive tumorigenesis, tumor immune-escape and drug resistance, and identifying novel immunotherapy targets, biomarkers and combination therapies (particularly with immunotherapy) for the treatment of pediatric cancers and other diseases.

Job Description

This Scientist will work closely with the Computational Biology Genomics Laboratory led by Dr. John Easton to evaluate/develop cutting-edge single-cell and spatial multiomics technologies, including scMultiome, single-cell DNA-seq, paired-tag, Visium HD, DBiT-seq, Xenium, seqFISH+, PhenoCycler, etc.

Maintaining an up-to-date knowledge of, and having a high level of enthusiasm for, new and emerging technologies and their potential application will be of high importance.  Working with biotechnology vendors on beta-testing of new technologies, customizing new and existing technologies, and developing “in-house” methods to address research needs and assist in developing new protocols will all be a part of this role.

This position will suit someone with experience in single cell or spatial biology who is enthusiastic to explore how new tools in this area can be used. The Scientist will have well-developed networks, an understanding of the landscape of the research community, and a desire to collaborate.

This Scientist will also assist to analyze and integrate high-throughput omics data, at bulk and single-cell levels, including transcriptomic, genomic, epigenomic, functional genomic, chemical genomic and proteomic data to model context-specific cellular/molecular networks and to identify actionable targets, biomarkers or compounds that could be translated into clinic for the development of precision medicine in pediatric cancer. The candidate will work closely with our collaborators in the departments of iTARGETS, Immunology, Chemical Biology, and Oncology for experiment design and data generation, and with our pipeline and visualization teams to explore novel analysis approaches for basic and translational research.

What you'll need to succeed:

Required:

  • Experience in single-cell or spatial omics

  • Knowledge of genomic analysis and ability to provide practical solutions

  • Willingness to learn and collaborate

  • Strong theoretical knowledge and practical skills

  • Leadership in manuscript drafting and publications

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills

  • Organizational skills and ability to manage fluctuating workloads

Preferred:

  • Experience with spatial biology protocols, histology, immunochemistry, or immunofluorescence techniques

  • NGS protocols and automated sequencers

  • In vivo animal work

  • Fluorescence-activated cell sorting or flow cytometry

  • Proficiency in bioinformatics tools and genomic analysis software

  • Ability to implement new work practices

  • Effective teamwork and troubleshooting skills

Responsibilities

  • Develop new single-cell and spatial protocols

  • Lead collaborative projects

  • Draft scientific manuscripts and SOPs

  • Perform lab maintenance duties

  • Maintain documentation and lab equipment

  • Ensure compliance with regulatory guidelines

Professional Growth Opportunities

The Yu Lab offers a collaborative environment with access to high-performance computing, cloud computing, innovative visualization tools, and automated analytical pipelines. Lab members interact with leading cancer and translational researchers, contributing to high-impact projects and participating in national and international meetings. The lab supports innovative research with its infrastructure, including a wet-lab component, providing flexibility to develop individual research programs.

Location

This position is based in Memphis, TN (100% on-site) with relocation assistance available.

Compensation
