License/Certification Required Essential Job Functions
The Academy at Middle Fork is a UNC System lab school that is operated by Appalachian State University. It is a partnership with Winston-Salem/Forsyth County Schools.
The school nurse is an integral part of access to education to reduce and eliminate health-related barriers to the education process for students. They promote health and safety, intervene with actual and potential health problems, provide case management services, and coordinate communication with families, appropriate school staff, and the medical home or private healthcare provider.
The school nurse will be based at the Academy at Middle Fork (Winston-Salem) andwill also serve the WS/FCS pre-k program that is housed in the same building as the Academy at Middle Fork.
Job Duties & Responsibilities:
Medical Care
* Provide basic first aid and general care to students
* Administer any drugs or medication prescribed by a doctor upon written request of the parents
Record Keeping & Documentation
* Review student immunization records to ensure state compliance
* Manage and maintain student health files and medication logs
* Maintain compliance with communicable disease standards
* Conduct individual health care needs assessments for students
* Develop health care plans for students as needed
* Conduct ongoing assessments of school community health and safety issues
* Compile periodic and year-end reports for the state
Other
* Conduct vision and hearing screenings
* Develop and lead workshops/training activities for school staff on health-related topics (i.e. diabetes, epi-pens)
* Develop and teach lessons for students on developmentally-appropriate health topics in collaboration with teachers and instructional staff
* Serve as a member of the school's CARE team
* Attend medical appointments and provide school-based support for students with high-level health needs
* Serve as the health-related community resource liaison for the school
* Monitor the school environment for health and safety issues
* Organize the health room/office, including inventorying supplies
* Other duties as assigned
Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities Required for this Position
* Knowledge and understanding of pediatric/adolescent nursing
* Understanding of health counseling and mental health crisis interventions
* Knowledgeable of communicable diseases
* Knowledge of applicable laws, regulations, and standards pertaining to school nursing practice (NC Nurse Practice Act, Standards of School Nursing Practice and the Eight components of a Coordinated School Health Program)
* Knowledge of School Health Law
* Experience with case management and health advocacy
* Ethnic and cultural sensitivity and competence
* Knowledge of contemporary health and psychosocial issues that influence children, families, and the community
* Recognize and understand school as a non-traditional health care setting
* Development, management, and evaluation of school health programs
* Understanding of environmental health within the school community
* Ability to plan, coordinate, and supervise the work of others
* Deal tactfully with others and exercise good judgment in appraising situations
* Make independent and timely nursing decisions and triage
* Work with a diverse group of individuals, including but not limited to staff, students, and families
* Collect data to direct evidence-based practice
* Record accurately services rendered and interpret and explain records, reports, activities, health care plans, accommodations, and medical interventions

Ability to communicate information to patients, families and staff in a concise and descriptive manner, verbally, in writing, or by demonstration.
Consultation/Advising: Ability to provide feedback and guidance/counsel to nursing staff on care rendered to patients.
Critical Thinking: Basic ability to implement the nursing process (assess, plan, implement and evaluate) with limited supervision or some supervision as needed.
