Flow Cytometrist/Staff Scientist

The Division of Intramural Research (DIR) of the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute (NHLBI) is seeking to recruit an outstanding staff scientist for the Flow Cytometry Core Facility.

 

Environment

The facility is large, busy, and composed of highly qualified staff. We place a strong emphasis on creating an environment where scientists and physician scientists can work together on disease-specific issues using the most appropriate approaches available. The existing faculty in the DIR/NHLBI is an outstanding group of internationally recognized biomedical researchers covering a wide range of basic and clinical research topics. The position offers exceptional opportunities for interdisciplinary collaboration with these groups as well as scientists outside of the NIH.

 

Instrumentation

Instrumentation includes:

  • Five cell sorters (including one 5L Spectral 6-way sorter)
  • Five analyzers (including one 5L Spectral cell analyzer)
  • Luminex-200
  • Amnis ImageStream Mark-II

The successful applicant will already be or expected to become proficient in operating these technologies and using the latest data analysis software packages.

 

Responsibilities

  • Perform specialized laboratory techniques in flow cytometry, imaging flow cytometry, cytokine analysis, and immunology to support the scientific research program.
  • Prepare summaries of experiments and contribute to the evaluation and discussion of results.
  • Develop new techniques as needed to answer research questions.
  • Maintain detailed records of laboratory experiments and perform statistical data analysis.
  • Provide training and guidance to students, fellows, and staff in using equipment and laboratory methods.
  • Enforce responsible safe laboratory practices and follow established safety guidelines.
  • Contribute to scientific publications and present new research data at meetings and seminars.
  • Attend training sessions for new methodologies and participate in conferences to stay abreast of scientific developments.
  • Candidate must be able to lift 20lbs weight and to perform computer data analysis for extended period of time.

 

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications

  • Master’s degree in an appropriate area of specialization with 4 years of cell sorting and multicolor flow cytometry experience. Exceptional candidates with a bachelor’s degree and 5 years of relevant experience will be considered.

Preferred Qualifications

  • PhD degree in an appropriate area of specialization.
  • Minimum of two years’ experience in flow cytometry in a core environment.

Additional Preferred Qualifications

  • Expertise in maintaining and operating flow cytometers.
  • Knowledge of study design, data analysis, and interpretation of results.
  • Strong interpersonal skills to effectively communicate with a range of audiences.
  • Excellent analytical and writing skills for preparing various documents.
  • Strong organizational skills to prioritize complex tasks.
  • Proficiency in cytometry data analysis software such as FlowJo, OMIQ Cytobank, FCS Express.
