The DeKalb County School District is seeking a qualified applicant for the position of District Special Education Nurse. Applicants must be mature, professional, dependable and conscientious in all activities. State of Georgia RN License, CPR certification and BSN are required. Applicant must have pediatric nursing experience. Duties can include but may not be limited to: g-tube feeding; trach management; catheterization; medication administration and/or medical procedures; medication management; monitoring students' health folders (i.e. medication information and physician information); record keeping and data collection; participation in meetings; communication with medical personnel, school faculty, staff and parents regarding individual student needs; as well as planning and facilitation of staff trainings. Applicant must exhibit a kind and caring manner and be able to communicate effectively with children and adults. Strong organizational skills and flexibility in routines are a must.

Title: Nurse, School (RN & LPN) Special EducationUnder general supervision, coordinates, plans, and implements school-based medical support for medically fragile students with disabilities as specified in physician's order and standards of care.

Essential FunctionsThe following duties are representative for this position. The omission of specific statements of duties does not exclude them from the classification if the work is similar, related, or a logical assignment for this classification. Other duties may be required and assigned.

  • Develops treatment plans for the medically fragile special education population-based on diagnosis, history, physical assessment, and physician's orders
  • Manages a caseload of medically fragile students with disabilities and conducts medical procedures, based on physician's orders, including treatment for chronic and acute conditions
  • Maintains daily documentation of assessments, interventions, treatments, and results for special education students on active caseload
  • Attends IEP meetings to assist with developing a plan of medical care and support along with an educational plan to meet student needs.
  • Trains, educates, and advises students, teachers, administrators, and staff in clinical procedures, infectious diseases, and other health issues regarding medically fragile students
  • Confers with parents, guardians, physicians, and other healthcare providers regarding changes and medical problems; conducts home visits as needed
  • Performs other duties as assigned
Education And/Or Experience
  • Bachelor's degree In Nursing from a Georgia Professional Standards Commission approved accredited college or university required
  • Minimum three (3) years of experience in pediatric nursing required
  • Valid State of Georgia registered nurse license required
  • Valid certificate in cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) required
  • Valid First Aid certificate preferred

  • Valid certificates in cardio pulmonary resuscitation (CPR) required.
