The Africana Studies and Research Center (ASRC) at Cornell University in Ithaca, NY, invites applications for an open rank, tenure-track professor position in African and African Diaspora art history and visual cultures, including research and publication in areas such as African Art, African American Art, Caribbean art, and other diasporas' related visual expressions. We welcome applicants who work in diverse genres and different historical periods, which may include architecture and the built environment, performance art, classicism, slavery, African/Black modernisms, comparative modernities, and contemporaneity, in addition to theory, aesthetics, and art criticism. Candidates should have teaching experience and be conversant with interdisciplinary methodologies. The Africana Studies and Research Center has, for more than 55 years, maintained its international stature as a multidisciplinary institution that established theoretical foundations for the field of Africana studies, embracing African, African American, Caribbean, and other diasporic African Studies. Colleagues are expected to be productive and engaged in the primary areas of faculty development, including teaching, research and service, and prepared to instruct students in a digital age still grappling with the COVID-19 pandemic, and increasingly impacted by new technologies, including AI. Colleagues are expected to teach introductory and advanced graduate and undergraduate courses in our interdisciplinary department, which at the latter level include biennially designing and delivering First-Year Writing Seminars (FWS) on a topic of interest in their field.
We seek a colleague who will contribute to our mission through advising undergraduates; supervising and mentoring Ph.D. students; and engaging in service to the ASRC and the University, including Cornells Advising Seminar for first-year students periodically. The appointment requires a 2-2 teaching load (typically one lecture course and one seminar each semester). Applicant is expected to contribute to the departments curriculums development and design, and engage with students, staff and faculty working across a range of disciplines on campus. We encourage applications from candidates with track records of engagement with their respective fields of expertise from an Africana perspective. The applicants should possess a Ph.D. degree in an appropriate field of study prior to the appointment start date on July 1, 2025.
