Description

Share in the thrill of space exploration and join our team! The Space Telescope Science Institute (STScI) has a few openings for Interns to gain experience working in the Roman Mission Office, Community Missions Office, or the Instruments Division. These are paid internships. This is a great opportunity to build practical experience in Roman Coronagraph preparatory science, Gemini GNIRS observations (GNIRS is a multi-function spectrograph) as well as HST and JWST archival data. We also have an internship opportunity for a student to gain experience simulating data for NASA's next flagship mission: the Roman Space Telescope. These data will be used to test the data processing pipelines being developed at STScI for use with the Roman Space Telescope, planned to be launched in late 2026.

Hours are flexible but must overlap with our core hours of 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. from Monday to Friday. Most of these internship positions require on-site presence, and the duration of the internships varies from eight weeks to up to a year. Short-term internships can work up to 40 hours per week, while longer-term internships can work up to 20 hours a week.

Who are we looking for?

We are looking for Baltimore-area undergraduate students who are dedicated, hardworking, proactive, eager to learn, and can work with minimum supervision. The opportunity may be ideal for you if you are seeking "outside of the classroom" experiences to further grow professionally in a team setting, participate in forefront science and have a keen interest in astronomy.

This opportunity is geared to majors in computer science, data science, aerospace engineering, physics, or astronomy (or related fields) . Familiarity with the python programming language and be able to write and run python code using the Jupyter Hub environment is a plus.

Applications will be accepted until November 30, 2024.
