The Department of Music in the College of Arts and Sciences at the University of Alabama at Birmingham invites applications for a Tenure-track Assistant Professor of Clarinet. This is a tenure earning, nine-month appointment that will begin August 15, 2025. Primary responsibilities will be to teach applied clarinet lessons to undergraduate music majors and minors, some non-major students, and graduate music education students. Secondary responsibilities may include teaching Class Woodwinds, coaching and directing clarinet and woodwind ensembles, and playing as a member in assigned faculty chamber ensembles.
Responsibilities of the position include:
· Teach applied clarinet and bass clarinet lessons.
· Teach courses in the music curriculum, as needed (may include woodwind techniques, pedagogy, and ensemble coaching).
· Perform as a member of UAB faculty chamber ensembles
· Perform a yearly on-campus solo recital
· Actively recruit and retain students for the Department of Music.
· Engage in outreach activities to promote the Department of Music within the university and the broader community.
· Conduct ensembles according to area(s) of expertise and provide other forms of support within the band program.
· Engage in department, college, and university service, including participation in faculty meetings, committees, academic advising, and events that contribute to the growth and success of the Department of Music.
Required Qualifications
A completed Doctorate in music by August 15th, 2025, along with evidence of effective studio teaching and performing.
Preferred Qualifications
Evidence of significant professional experience as a performer; evidence of significant experience as an applied instructor at the university level; and evidence of teaching in woodwind pedagogy, techniques, and ensemble coaching/directing.
